What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Electrical Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Intern, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals, basic circuit analysis, and current safety standards, typically gained through ongoing coursework in an accredited engineering program. Familiarity with industry-standard design software like AutoCAD or MATLAB, as well as exposure to lab equipment and measurement tools, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns excel in team environments and adapt quickly to project needs. These skills and qualities are critical for contributing meaningfully to real-world projects, ensuring safety, and building a strong foundation for a future engineering career.

What types of projects or tasks can an Electrical Intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Electrical Intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of tasks such as designing schematics, supporting circuit analysis, helping with equipment testing, and updating documentation. Interns often collaborate closely with engineers and technicians on real-world projects, which may include site visits, troubleshooting electrical systems, or participating in project meetings. The work environment is typically team-oriented and provides opportunities to learn from experienced professionals, giving you hands-on experience that is valuable for your future career.

What is an electrical internship?

An electrical internship is a temporary work experience program designed for students or recent graduates who are interested in the electrical engineering field. Interns work under the supervision of experienced professionals to gain practical skills and knowledge related to electrical systems, circuit design, project management, and safety protocols. These internships often take place in industries such as construction, manufacturing, utilities, or technology companies. The experience helps interns apply theoretical knowledge from their studies to real-world projects and can improve their job prospects after graduation.

โšก Electrical Design Engineer

Design it. Program it. See it run.

Ready to move beyond small tasks and start owning real automation projects?

At PowerBuilt, youโ€™ll work on custom material handling and automation systems from design through startupโ€”and actually see your work come to life on the floor.

???? Why PowerBuilt?

Weโ€™re not your typical engineering environment:

???? Jeans every day โ€“ casual, laid-back office culture
โš™๏ธ Hands-on involvement โ€“ work directly with equipment, not just drawings and theory
โœˆ๏ธ Up to ~25% travel across the U.S. โ€“ with all travel handled for you
???? Company-paid travel โ€“ no out-of-pocket hassle
???? Stable & growing โ€“ weโ€™ve never had layoffs and continue to expand
???? Major investments in our manufacturing facility
???? In-house fabrication shop โ€“ true turnkey solutions under one roof
???? Work on exciting technology โ€“ robotics, AGVs, AMRs, conveyance, and controls
???? Flexible schedule + ability to work from home as needed
???? Real project exposure โ€“ from design through commissioning

???? What Youโ€™ll Do

As an Electrical Design Engineer, youโ€™ll support project execution and grow into full ownership of electrical controls projects.

Youโ€™ll:

  • Assist in electrical controls design across a variety of projects
  • Develop electrical control systems and panel layouts
  • Support PLC, HMI, and robot programming across multiple platforms
  • Assist with project documentation and electrical standards
  • Support startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting (onsite and remote)
  • Work closely with fabrication, mechanical, and engineering teams
  • Develop troubleshooting skills on live equipment
  • Provide support for systems designed by senior engineers
  • Gradually take on increasing project responsibility over time

???? What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • 2+ years of electrical controls or manufacturing engineering experience (or strong internship/co-op experience)
  • Exposure to PLC, HMI, or robotics programming (school or work)
  • Basic understanding of electrical control systems and panel design
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop technical expertise
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Strong communication, organization, and attention to detail
  • Comfortable working in a factory/job shop environment
  • Ability to travel ~25% (primarily U.S.)

Education:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering OR
  • Associateโ€™s degree with 2+ years of manufacturing experience

???? Location

Dublin, OH or Bellefontaine, OH
Manufacturing facility: Bellefontaine, OH

???? Why This Role?

This is a great opportunity for someone who wants:

  • Real hands-on experience with automation systems
  • Exposure to full project lifecycles (design โ†’ build โ†’ startup)
  • A clear path to grow into a lead engineer role
  • A team that builds what it designs
  • A stable, growing company investing in people and equipment

At PowerBuilt, you wonโ€™t just learn engineeringโ€”youโ€™ll apply it on real systems that get built and run.
