Electrical Internship information

What is an electrical internship?

An electrical internship is a temporary work experience program designed for students or recent graduates who are interested in the electrical engineering field. Interns work under the supervision of experienced professionals to gain practical skills and knowledge related to electrical systems, circuit design, project management, and safety protocols. These internships often take place in industries such as construction, manufacturing, utilities, or technology companies. The experience helps interns apply theoretical knowledge from their studies to real-world projects and can improve their job prospects after graduation.

What types of projects or tasks can an electrical intern expect to work on during their internship?

As an Electrical Intern, you can expect to assist with a variety of tasks such as designing schematics, supporting circuit analysis, helping with equipment testing, and updating documentation. Interns often collaborate closely with engineers and technicians on real-world projects, which may include site visits, troubleshooting electrical systems, or participating in project meetings. The work environment is typically team-oriented and provides opportunities to learn from experienced professionals, giving you hands-on experience that is valuable for your future career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Intern, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals, basic circuit analysis, and current safety standards, typically gained through ongoing coursework in an accredited engineering program. Familiarity with industry-standard design software like AutoCAD or MATLAB, as well as exposure to lab equipment and measurement tools, is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns excel in team environments and adapt quickly to project needs. These skills and qualities are critical for contributing meaningfully to real-world projects, ensuring safety, and building a strong foundation for a future engineering career.

What is the difference between Electrical Internship vs Electrical Technician?

AspectElectrical InternshipElectrical Technician
CredentialsTypically students or recent graduates; no required certificationsUsually requires technical certifications or licenses
Work EnvironmentLearning-focused, supervised, often in training settingsHands-on, operational, maintenance, and installation tasks
Industry UsageEntry-level, educational, training programsProfessional, ongoing employment in electrical services

Electrical internships are primarily educational opportunities for students to gain industry experience, while electrical technicians are trained professionals performing electrical work. Internships serve as a stepping stone toward becoming a licensed technician or electrician, who has more responsibilities and requires relevant certifications.

Job description

Tasks summary:

Architecture Concept & Requirements

  • Translate missionlevel V, thrust, lifetime, and reliability goals into EP system requirements (performance, power, mass, contamination, EMI).
  • Produce System Requirements, Interface Control Documents (ICDs), and Description documents for thruster assemblies, PowerProcessing Units (PPU), propellant feed & storage, and control electronics.
  • Perform requirement management and maintain bidirectional traceability throughout the project lifecycle.

Detailed Design

  • Perform systemlevel power, thermal, and mass budget analyses; produce tradeoff matrices (thrust vs. power vs. propellant mass, reliability vs. complexity).
  • Lead detailed mechanical/electrical design of thruster mounting, heater/thermal control, and PPU (converter, regulator, faultprotection).
  • Define propellant handling hardware (tanks, valves, feedlines, interconnects) and develop contamination control procedures.
  • Negotiate ICDs and interface agreements with external thruster vendors and component suppliers.
  • Support or Develop 1D/3D plume models and perform reliability prediction.

Modeling & Simulation

Software & Control

  • Define command and telemetry interfaces for EP & healthmonitoring telemetry.
  • Work with FSW teams to develop thrust profile generation, and fault detection isolation recovery (FDIR) algorithms.

CrossFunctional Coordination, Stakeholder & Program Interaction

  • Communicate technical status, risk assessments and tradestudy results to senior management and/or customers or partners.
  • Negotiate and manage ICDs with platform subsystems and supplier teams.
  • Support B&P (Phase 0 & pre-phase A).

Integration & Verification (IVV)

  • Develop verification plans, test matrices, and validation procedures for unit, subsystem, and spacecraftlevel EP tests.
  • Oversee hardwareintheloop (HIL) and thruststand testing, including thrustcalibration, specific impulse measurement, pulsemodulation, and lifetime cycling.

Technical Leadership & Mentorship

  • Mentor, guide junior engineers and interns.
  • Act as technical liaison with customers, partners and external vendors
  • Act as Continuous Improvement stakeholder
  • Contribute to MDA's knowledgebase, process enhancements, and standards development.

Configuration, Documentation & Standards Management

  • Author and maintain MDA EP standards (thruster qualification, PPU design, contamination limits).
  • Ensure all artefacts, analysis, software, deliverables and documentations are version controlled in PLM environment.
  • Support design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, MRR/TRR...etc.).
  • Support Technology RoadMapping & Innovation.

Launch-Site, On-Orbit & Operations Support

  • Provide realtime EP support during launch, earlyorbit checkout, and routine stationkeeping.
  • Support onorbit checkout procedures, thruster test campaigns, and contingency recovery plans.
  • Support SOOH development and associated operator training.
  • B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, or Physics with 8+years of electrical propulsion engineering experience on LEO/MEO platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of EP thruster families and their performance characteristics.
  • Experience with propellant storage & feedsystem design (tanks, valves, microvalves).
  • Strong understanding of aerospace system engineering fundamentals, space environment and orbit mechanics.
  • Hands-on individual who can support systems integration processes and capability to test systems and resolve problems.
  • Experience with Confluence and JIRA.
  • Demonstrated capability to efficiently work with little to no supervision
  • Ability to distill complex problems to fundamentals to solve with analysis, similarity, or creativity.
