The Fab Technician is an entry-level, hands-on role that supports a wide range of automotive development activities, including vehicle assembly, metal fabrication and welding, and rapid prototyping using 3D printing. This position is ideal for someone with strong mechanical aptitude who enjoys working with tools, wants to build practical skills, and is eager to learn in a fast-paced, prototype-focused environment.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble and disassemble vehicle components by following detailed work instructions.
  • Use basic hand and pneumatic tools to support prototype vehicle builds.
  • Assist with the installation of mechanical, electrical, and fluid system components on development vehicles.
  • Read and follow basic blueprints, drawings, and build sheets after receiving training.
  • Support the fabrication of brackets, fixtures, and prototype parts for automotive applications.
  • Operate basic fabrication tools such as saws, grinders, drills, and shears in a safe and effective manner.
  • Assist with part preparation, fit-up, and finishing to meet project specifications.
  • Learn and perform basic MIG and TIG welding operations safely, with training provided.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe fabrication and assembly work areas.
  • Operate additive manufacturing and 3D printing equipment after training.
  • Assist with 3D-printed part post-processing, including sanding, trimming, fitting, and bonding.
  • Perform basic measurements on parts and record results accurately for documentation and quality purposes.
  • Support routine maintenance of machines and equipment in the prototyping lab.
  • Help with lab organization, including tool management, material storage, and general housekeeping.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions accurately to complete tasks on time and to specification.
  • Collaborate with team members across disciplines to support prototype and development vehicle projects.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures when working with tools, equipment, and combustible liquids.

Essential Skills

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and a genuine interest in automotive technology.
  • Experience using common hand tools and a willingness to learn fabrication and welding skills.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately and consistently.
  • Basic computer skills, including email, Microsoft Office, and simple data entry.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and perform regular physical tasks such as bending, crouching, pushing, pulling, reaching, standing, stooping, and walking.
  • Capability to drive a car as part of job-related activities.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills with a collaborative mindset.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn new processes and technologies quickly.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Automotive shop or technical school coursework is beneficial.
  • Experience with welding, metal fabrication, or machining is a plus.
  • Familiarity with 3D printing or CAD software is preferred but not required.
  • Previous experience in automotive service, dealership, factory, or hobbyist automotive work is advantageous.
  • Background or exposure as a maintenance technician, automotive technician, or in paint preparation is helpful.

Why Work Here?

You will join a professional, technically driven environment where contract team members receive the same level of respect and day-to-day treatment as direct employees. The organization invests in your growth through on-the-job training in assembly, welding, and additive manufacturing, giving you the chance to build highly marketable, hands-on skills. You will work on cutting-edge prototype and development vehicles, gaining exposure to advanced automotive technologies in a supportive, collaborative culture that values learning, craftsmanship, and safety.

You will work with a variety of tools and equipment, including hand and pneumatic tools, fabrication tools such as saws, grinders, drills, and shears, as well as additive manufacturing and 3D printing systems. The work involves moderate to strong levels of physical activity, including bending, crouching, reaching, standing, sitting, stooping, walking, lifting and carrying up to 50 lbs, and pushing or pulling equipment. There may be exposure to combustible liquids, but not to compressed gases or extreme temperatures, and appropriate safety procedures are in place.
