Embedded Software Engineer III
Location : Ft Worth, TX (hybrid - 3x/wk onsite)
Target Start Date : ASAP
Long-Term Contract (2-3+ years)
Pay Rate : $61.00-$71.00/hr
Position Summary
Our client, a global leader in advanced autonomous and robotic solutions across multiple industries, is seeking senior-level Embedded Software Engineers to participate in the full software development life cycle for embedded software on unmanned robotic vehicles. The Embedded Software Engineer III develops and integrates embedded application software for autonomous robotic and vehicle platforms. This role focuses on designing robust, real-time application software that operates on an established embedded software stack to support vehicle control, actuator management, sensor integration, and autonomous system functionality. Working closely with software, electrical, mechanical, systems, and test engineers, this individual contributes throughout the software development lifecycle, from requirements and design through implementation, validation, deployment, and ongoing product support.
Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain embedded application software using C and modern C++ (C++14 or newer).
  • Develop real-time, multithreaded software applications for RTOS and embedded Linux environments.
  • Implement application software supporting vehicle controls, actuators, sensors, and autonomous system functionality.
  • Develop clean, maintainable, and scalable software using object-oriented design principles and software engineering best practices.
  • Participate in software architecture, design reviews, implementation, debugging, testing, and validation activities.
  • Develop and maintain unit tests, integration tests, and automated build and verification processes.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve software issues across embedded hardware and integrated systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to integrate and validate software with mechanical, electrical, and systems components.
  • Participate in Agile development activities including sprint planning, backlog refinement, code reviews, and retrospectives.
  • Support deployed products by improving software reliability, performance, scalability, and maintainability.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • 5+ years of embedded software development experience.
  • Strong proficiency in C and modern C++ (C++14 or newer).
  • Experience developing embedded applications for RTOS and/or embedded Linux platforms.
  • Experience designing multithreaded, multicore, and real-time software applications.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as CAN, Ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP, Modbus, SPI, or serial communications.
  • Experience using Git, GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket for source control.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, static analysis, and code quality tools.
  • Experience working in Agile/Scrum development environments.
  • Understanding of structured software development processes, including requirements traceability, verification, and validation.
  • Strong debugging, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing software for robotics, autonomous vehicles, industrial automation, or other embedded electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with embedded Linux and RTOS application development.
  • Knowledge of functional safety principles and requirements-driven software development.
  • Experience with multithreaded control applications, actuator controls, PID control loops, or motion control systems.
  • Experience developing scalable embedded software for deployed products with over-the-air update capabilities.
  • Familiarity with robotics middleware, distributed software architectures, or publish/subscribe communication frameworks.
  • Experience collaborating with mechanical, electrical, systems, and test engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated passion for embedded software engineering, continuous learning, and emerging technologies.
  • Exposure to AI technology is a big plus.
