CHIEF ENGINEER - MOBILE

Purpose

The Chief Engineer - Mobile manages the Mobile Application Engineering Team supporting both offhighway and onhighway customers across the Americas and coordinates with global colleagues to support customers worldwide. The incumbent leads product and technical capability development, defines application engineering approaches, and drives engineering strategies that enable Timken's growth in mobile markets (onhighway and offhighway).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical leader internally and externally for mobile market segments (onhighway and offhighway) within the Americas and act as a global technical resource as needed. Act as the primary technical contact for customer technical executives and decision makers, influencing customer design decisions through technical expertise, datadriven recommendations, and clear communication.
  • Set direction for how Timken products are designed into mobile applications, identifying new products, materials, and technical capabilities required to meet business growth targets.
  • Negotiate project goals and business plans with executives, R&D, Product Management, and IT to address identified needs and deliverables.
  • Be accountable for technical signoff on application engineering deliverables, internal deviation and product change requests and product release standards in coordination with R&D and Quality.
  • Manage customer application questions, internal engineering change control, and quality/performance issues, including technical leadership and escalation support for quality and performance investigations.
  • Manage longterm product development projects, joint development agreements, research initiatives, and strategic partnerships while honoring NDAs.
  • Identify and be accountable for managing technical risk and liability exposure for the mobile business; implement reviews and mitigation plans for highrisk applications.
  • Drive adoption of new technology, tools, and processes across the application engineering team.
  • Oversee prototype design, test programs, and evaluation procedures for new or customized mobile solutions; manage prototype launches and test requests.
  • Contribute to DFMEA activities and lead major new risk assessments for product or equipment changes.
  • Protect Timken intellectual property: review patent disclosures and ensure appropriate IP handling in collaborations.
  • Manage a team of approximately 10 engineers, setting priorities, allocating resources, and ensuring timely delivery of internal and external customer commitments.
  • Recruit, hire, and mentor application engineers; develop staff technical competencies and succession plans.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering required; Master's degree preferred.
  • 15+ years of engineering and/or technical leadership experience in mobile, automotive, offhighway, or related markets.
  • Deep knowledge of bearing systems and powertrain/driveline applications for onhighway and offhighway vehicles and equipment.
  • Strong customer engagement experience with the ability to influence and negotiate at executive and technical levels.
  • Proven leadership experience: hiring, coaching, mentoring and building highperforming engineering teams.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites, supplier locations and Timken facilities as required (15-20%).
