    Job description

    As a Registered Nurse (RN) - Surgical Unit (Orthopedic/General Surgery) you will become part of a dedicated team committed to making our communities healthier through exceptional patient care. In this role, you will provide comprehensive nursing care to patients recovering from orthopedic procedures and general surgeries while collaborating with physicians, therapists, and interdisciplinary care teams to promote optimal recovery and positive patient outcomes.
    Essential Responsibilities

    • Perform comprehensive initial and ongoing patient assessments, including physical, psychosocial, environmental, cultural, educational, self-care, and discharge planning needs.
    • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans for post-operative orthopedic and general surgery patients.
    • Monitor patients' recovery following orthopedic procedures, joint replacements, abdominal surgeries, and other general surgical interventions.
    • Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, and other prescribed treatments safely and accurately.
    • Monitor neurovascular status, pain levels, surgical incisions, wound healing, drainage systems, and post-operative complications.
    • Perform wound care, dressing changes, drain management, catheter care, specimen collection, and other clinical procedures.
    • Identify changes in patient condition and communicate findings promptly to physicians and the interdisciplinary care team.
    • Accurately document all patient assessments, interventions, medications, treatments, and responses in the electronic medical record.
    • Assist patients with activities of daily living, including mobility, ambulation, hygiene, nutrition, and elimination while encouraging safe recovery.
    • Collaborate with surgeons, hospitalists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, case managers, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care.
    • Participate in discharge planning and provide patient and family education regarding medications, wound care, mobility precautions, rehabilitation, fall prevention, and follow-up care.
    • Advocate for the physical, emotional, and psychosocial well-being of patients throughout hospitalization.
    • Maintain infection prevention, patient safety, and quality improvement standards in accordance with hospital policies.
    • Assist with orientation, mentoring, and training of new nursing staff as assigned.
    • Respond effectively to emergencies and changes in patient condition using sound clinical judgment and critical thinking.
    Qualifications
    • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in North Carolina or compact multistate license.
    • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) required.
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
    • One to three years of recent acute care nursing experience preferred.
    • Previous Medical-Surgical, Orthopedic, Surgical, Trauma, or Acute Care experience preferred.
    • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
    • Handle With Care certification required within four months of hire.
