Job Description:
Schnabel Engineering is seeking a senior-level Geotechnical and Pavement Engineer to join our office. The selected candidate for this position will assist project managers with the design pavement design projects and will provide support during construction.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Provide pavement design engineering services while working within the transportation agency design team. Services will range from performing individual engineering tasks within established procedures to serving as a project manager for multiple design projects.
  • Travel to project sites within Maryland and evaluate the conditions of the pavements and geotechnical concerns. Project responsibilities include providing geotechnical recommendations and pavement design and technical assistance to other agencies.
  • Perform pavement design and analysis of new pavements and rehabilitation of existing pavements using AASHTO-93 and MEPD methodologies.
  • Perform pavement condition surveys on flexible and rigid pavements throughout the state of Maryland.
  • Determine existing conditions based on available state records to identify projects needs.
  • Prepare clear and correct written reports of the project including investigations, tests, design assumptions and recommendations.
  • Attend meetings and represent the agency.
  • Manage multiple projects at the same time.
  • Plan and coordinate geotechnical field work.
  • Assign and review laboratory tests.

Required Skills/Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Strong grasp of soil mechanics and pavement design fundamentals
  • Excellent understanding of pavement management concepts and ability to identify pavement distress types and causes
  • Experience analyzing nondestructive testing data (FWD and GPR)
  • Good understanding of GIS tools and concepts
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Attention to detail and well-organized
  • Strong work ethic and a desire for continual self-improvement
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Valid driver's license and dependable transportation
  • Physically able to negotiate construction sites, enter trenches, climb ladders and work outside

Desired Skills/Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering (with a concentration in geotechnical and pavement engineering) from an ABET-accredited program
  • 10+ years of professional geotechnical and or pavement design experience
  • PE certification, or the ability to obtain certification prior to employment
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and MicroStation

Other Requirements:
  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment screening
