Laborup Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machinist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machinist, you need strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and experience with blueprint reading, typically supported by vocational training or an apprenticeship. Proficiency with CNC machines, manual lathes, milling machines, and familiarity with CAD/CAM software are essential, along with relevant certifications such as NIMS. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure precision manufacturing, safe operations, and efficient collaboration in producing high-quality components.

What are some of the common challenges faced by machinists on the job, and how can they be managed?

Machinists often encounter challenges such as tight production deadlines, maintaining high precision in parts manufacturing, and keeping up with evolving CNC technology. Managing these challenges typically involves strong attention to detail, effective time management, and continuous learning to stay current with new machinery and software. Collaborating closely with engineers and quality control teams also helps resolve production issues quickly and ensures that finished products meet specifications.

What is machining?

Machining is a manufacturing process in which material is removed from a workpiece to shape or finish it into the desired form, typically using tools such as lathes, mills, or drills. It is commonly used in metalworking but can also be applied to plastics, wood, and other materials. Machining processes include cutting, drilling, grinding, and turning, and are essential for creating precise parts for various industries like automotive, aerospace, and electronics. Skilled machinists operate these machines, read blueprints, and use measuring instruments to ensure accuracy. Advancements in technology, such as CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining, have greatly improved precision and efficiency in the field.

What is the difference between Machining vs CNC Operator?

AspectMachiningCNC Operator
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; technical trainingHigh school diploma; CNC programming knowledge often preferred
Work EnvironmentMachine shops, manufacturing plantsManufacturing facilities, machine shops
Job RoleOperating various manual or semi-automatic machines to shape partsSetting up, operating, and monitoring CNC machines
Industry UsageCommon in manufacturing, aerospace, automotivePrimarily in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive sectors

Machining involves operating manual or semi-automatic machines to create parts, requiring technical skills and hands-on work. CNC Operators focus on programming and managing CNC machines, often requiring knowledge of G-code and setup procedures. Both roles are essential in manufacturing but differ in technical complexity and automation level.

    Job description

    Overview:

We are seeking a high-caliber CNC Machinist to join our precision machining team in Oak Ridge. We are a specialized manufacturer producing critical, close-tolerance components for the aerospace and defense industries. If you want to see your work on satellites, fighter jets, and rockets, this is the shop for you.

Unlike high-volume "button-pusher" shops, we focus on low-volume, short-run production. This is a role for a true machinist who enjoys the challenge of complex geometries and one-off parts. We need someone who is not just a machine operator, but a technical problem-solver who can take a project from setup through final inspection.

We have openings on 1st and 2nd shift

    Compensation:

    • $26 - $34 / hr

    Shifts:

    • 1st Shift: 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM (Monday - Friday)
    • 2nd Shift: 5:30 PM - 3:30 AM (Monday - Thursday)

    Responsibilities:

    • Independent Setups & Operation – Perform complete setups, touch-offs, and tool offsets on CNC machines for high-complexity, short-run aerospace parts.
    • G-Code Optimization – Read, interpret, and modify G-code at the controller to troubleshoot machining processes and ensure the highest accuracy.
    • Precision Machining – Machine parts to extremely close tolerances, often working with exotic materials and complex geometries required for flight-critical applications.
    • Manual Support – Operate manual equipment (mills, lathes, saws) as needed to support production and secondary operations.
    • Blueprint & GD&T Literacy – Read and interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications, including a strong mastery of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
    • Process Improvement – Collaborate with engineering to verify CNC programs (MasterCam) and optimize machining strategies for better efficiency and quality.
    • Quality Control – Inspect finished parts using precision measuring tools to ensure 100% compliance with AS9100D and ISO 9001 standards.

    Requirements

    Qualifications:

    Required:

    • Machining Experience: 5-10 years of professional machining experience with a heavy emphasis on CNC setups and troubleshooting.
    • Technical Proficiency: Proven ability to perform your own setups, offsets, and G-code modifications.
    • Precision Background: Deep experience in close-tolerance machining and fabrication of custom-designed equipment.
    • Blueprint Literacy: Strong ability to read complex prints and understand GD&T requirements.
    • Tooling Knowledge: Strong knowledge of precision machining tools, metal fabrication, and mechanical equipment.

    Preferred:

    • 5-Axis Experience: Prior experience with 5-axis machining is a significant advantage.
    • Manual Skills: Proficiency in manual machining (mills/lathes) is highly valued.
    • Industry Experience: Previous experience in an Aerospace or Defense manufacturing environment (AS9100D/Nadcap).
    • Software: Experience with MasterCam software is a strong plus.

    Benefits

    • Competitive salary and benefits package, including paid healthcare, holidays, and vacation.
    • Matching 401k.
    • Education reimbursement.
    • Opportunities for professional growth and development.
    • Collaborative and innovative work environment.
