Laborup Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machinist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machinist, you need strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and experience with blueprint reading, typically supported by vocational training or an apprenticeship. Proficiency with CNC machines, manual lathes, milling machines, and familiarity with CAD/CAM software are essential, along with relevant certifications such as NIMS. Problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure precision manufacturing, safe operations, and efficient collaboration in producing high-quality components.

What are some of the common challenges faced by machinists on the job, and how can they be managed?

Machinists often encounter challenges such as tight production deadlines, maintaining high precision in parts manufacturing, and keeping up with evolving CNC technology. Managing these challenges typically involves strong attention to detail, effective time management, and continuous learning to stay current with new machinery and software. Collaborating closely with engineers and quality control teams also helps resolve production issues quickly and ensures that finished products meet specifications.

What is machining?

Machining is a manufacturing process in which material is removed from a workpiece to shape or finish it into the desired form, typically using tools such as lathes, mills, or drills. It is commonly used in metalworking but can also be applied to plastics, wood, and other materials. Machining processes include cutting, drilling, grinding, and turning, and are essential for creating precise parts for various industries like automotive, aerospace, and electronics. Skilled machinists operate these machines, read blueprints, and use measuring instruments to ensure accuracy. Advancements in technology, such as CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining, have greatly improved precision and efficiency in the field.

What is the difference between Machining vs CNC Operator?

AspectMachiningCNC Operator
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; technical trainingHigh school diploma; CNC programming knowledge often preferred
Work EnvironmentMachine shops, manufacturing plantsManufacturing facilities, machine shops
Job RoleOperating various manual or semi-automatic machines to shape partsSetting up, operating, and monitoring CNC machines
Industry UsageCommon in manufacturing, aerospace, automotivePrimarily in manufacturing, aerospace, automotive sectors

Machining involves operating manual or semi-automatic machines to create parts, requiring technical skills and hands-on work. CNC Operators focus on programming and managing CNC machines, often requiring knowledge of G-code and setup procedures. Both roles are essential in manufacturing but differ in technical complexity and automation level.

    Job description

    Overview:

We are hiring multiple Senior CNC Machinists across mid and senior-level skill bands to support our climate-controlled, high-mix, low-volume precision machining facility in Tulsa, OK. We are an industry-leading manufacturer building advanced, custom equipment for the construction and utilities industries.

We operate a vast array of equipment—from 2-axis lathes to 5-axis vertical and horizontal mills, mill-turns, and more. Regardless of your industry background or the specific machines you have experience with, we have the team, training, and technology to support your growth.

    Culture of Ownership:

Despite our large scale, we maintain a strong family-owned feel that heavily values hard work, growth, and accountability. We care deeply about reliability—showing up on time, being ready at the machine, and taking pride in the craftsmanship of the parts you produce. This isn't a place where you just clock in and hide in a silo; our culture thrives on collaboration and a shared willingness to pitch in where production demands it. If you are a problem-solver who owns the job end-to-end, you will fit right in.

    • Weekend Shift: Friday – Sunday, 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (3 x 12s — work 36 hours, get paid for 40)

    Senior CNC Machinist:

    • Perform highly complex set-ups, including instances where no work holding/fixture is available, requiring you to build your own set-up
    • Perform prove-outs of new programs and machining processes
    • Read, make edits, and optimize CNC programs directly at the machine
    • Operate all advanced inspection equipment, including Micro-Hite & Faro Arms
    • Troubleshoot and resolve non-conformance, machine, and material issues autonomously
    • Effectively train and mentor other machinists on the floor
    • Meet or beat assigned run times
    • Proactively suggest and implement continuous process improvements

    CNC Machinist:

    • Perform complete machine set-ups including:
    • Loading fixtures and setting up/loading tools
    • Selecting and loading the correct machining programs
    • Setting work coordinates and tool offsets
    • Sizing in the first part using offsets and observed measurements (using micrometers, calipers, gauges, and indicators)
    • Reading and interpreting complex drawings, symbols, and GD&T tolerances
    • Identifying and selecting the correct material for each job
    • Meeting assigned run times while holding strict specifications

    Qualifications:

We are hiring for two primary profiles and will align level and pay to your demonstrated capability.

    Senior CNC Machinist:

    • Ability to build setups from scratch without existing fixtures
    • Strong ability to fluently read G-code/M-code and efficiently edit programs to maintain quality and throughput
    • Experience setting up unproven parts and troubleshooting tooling/process/machine variables to achieve first-article success
    • Strong leadership mindset with a willingness to train others and share knowledge
    • Unwavering commitment to safety, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement

    CNC Machinist:

    • This profile is ideal for an independent machinist capable of owning setup-heavy, complex work.
    • 3+ years of real CNC machining experience, ideally including multi-axis machines
