Fluidstack Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Site Reliability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Site Reliability Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, systems administration, and software engineering, often supported by a degree in a technical field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS or GCP), container orchestration (such as Kubernetes), infrastructure as code (Terraform or Ansible), and monitoring tools (Prometheus, Grafana) is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a proactive mindset help SREs excel at incident management and cross-functional collaboration. These skills are crucial for maintaining system reliability, minimizing downtime, and driving continuous improvement in complex technical environments.

What are some of the most common challenges Site Reliability Engineers face when balancing system reliability with rapid software delivery?

Site Reliability Engineers (SREs) often navigate the challenge of maintaining highly reliable systems while supporting fast-paced software releases. This involves managing incidents, automating processes to reduce manual toil, and working closely with development teams to embed reliability into the software development lifecycle. SREs must carefully prioritize their efforts between proactive improvements and urgent, reactive fire-fighting. Effective communication and collaboration with both operations and development teams are crucial to ensuring service uptime without slowing down innovation.

What is a Site Reliability Engineer?

A Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) is a professional who applies software engineering principles to infrastructure and operations problems. Their primary goal is to create scalable and highly reliable software systems, often bridging the gap between development and IT operations. SREs automate tasks, monitor system health, respond to incidents, and work to improve system reliability and performance. They also help define service level objectives (SLOs) and ensure systems meet customer expectations for uptime and availability.

What is the difference between Site Reliability Engineer vs DevOps Engineer?

AspectSite Reliability EngineerDevOps Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a computer science degree, certifications like AWS, Google Cloud, or KubernetesSimilar credentials, often with cloud certifications and scripting skills
Work EnvironmentFocuses on maintaining and improving system reliability, often in large-scale production environmentsWorks on automation, CI/CD pipelines, and deployment processes across development and operations teams
Industry UsageCommon in tech, cloud services, and large-scale enterprise companiesWidely used in software development, cloud, and IT organizations

Both roles require strong technical skills and cloud knowledge, but SREs focus more on system reliability and uptime, while DevOps engineers emphasize automation and deployment processes. They often collaborate but have distinct primary responsibilities.

Job description

About Fluidstack

At Fluidstack, we build the compute, data centers, and power that will fuel artificial superintelligence. We supply GWs of compute capabilities to the world's biggest AI Labs at industry-defining speeds.

Our team is small, fast, and obsessed with quality. We own outcomes end-to-end, challenge assumptions, and treat our customers' problems as our own. No task is beneath anyone here.

There are a few thousand people who will shape the trajectory of superintelligence. Come and be one of them.

About the Role

The Senior Civil Engineer is a core member of Fluidstack's Design and Engineering team. You will own the civil engineering workstream across a multi-site, multi-state development portfolio from early-stage site screening through design, permitting, and construction completion.

This is an owner/developer role. You will manage external civil consultants, coordinate with geotechnical engineers, interface with local authorities, and drive technical alignment across GCs and project teams. You will be the subject matter authority on site civil grading, drainage, utilities, floodplain, and earthwork across some of the largest data center campuses in development.

Responsibilities

Site Evaluation & Due Diligence

  • Lead civil due diligence for greenfield and conversion sites: topography, drainage, utilities, soils, floodplain, and environmental constraints

  • Review traffic impact studies and offsite infrastructure requirements; flag civil cost and schedule risks during site selection

  • Direct geotechnical investigations, scope RFPs, review boring programs, interpret reports, and assign design actions

  • Assess site suitability for large-scale grading, infrastructure, and stormwater management

  • Identify fatal flaws and quantify civil cost risks during site selection

Design & Standards

  • Develop and maintain civil basis of design, master specifications, and standard drawings for FluidStack's campus portfolio

  • Manage external civil consultants from schematic through IFC and review deliverables, enforce standards, and track design quality

  • Establish grading strategies, earthwork balance, and cut/fill sequences for large-scale campus developments

  • Structure phased delivery including early work packages (mass grading, site utilities, early enablement) to accelerate critical path

  • Coordinate site utility routing: water, sewer, storm, and medium-voltage underground infrastructure, including offsite tie-ins and roadway improvements

  • Integrate civil scope with structural, MEP, fiber, and architectural design teams

Permitting & Regulatory

  • Lead civil permitting strategy across jurisdictions: land disturbance, NPDES/SWPPP, floodplain (CLOMR/LOMR), environmental, and utility permits

  • Coordinate with state and local agencies, drainage authorities, and utility providers

  • Manage permit schedules as part of overall project critical path

  • Monitor regulatory risk including wetlands, 100-year floodplain, karst, expansive soils, and develop mitigation strategies

Construction Support

  • Review contractor submittals, RFIs, and field conditions for civil scope

  • Conduct periodic site visits and document civil construction quality and compliance

  • Manage design changes and change order scope for civil work

  • Coordinate civil closeout, as-builts, and acceptance with local authorities

Basic Qualifications
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering

  • 7+ years of civil engineering experience, including significant work on large-scale site development projects (data centers, industrial, logistics, or power infrastructure preferred)

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or active pursuit with expected licensure within 12 months

  • Experience directing external civil consultants and managing design deliverable quality

  • Working knowledge of grading, earthwork, stormwater management, and site utility design

  • Familiarity with NPDES permitting, floodplain regulations (FEMA/CLOMR/LOMR), and land disturbance permitting

  • Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D; familiarity with GIS tools

  • Willingness to travel to project sites across the US (estimated 20-30%)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in hyperscale data center, large-scale industrial, or energy infrastructure development

  • Familiarity with FM Global site civil requirements

  • Geotechnical evaluation experience (coordination and interpretation)

  • Experience with expansive clay soils, karst geology, or high water table site conditions

  • Exposure to MISO/utility interconnection land and civil coordination

  • Owner/developer-side experience (vs. pure consultant or EPC)

Benefits
  • Competitive total compensation package (salary + equity).

  • Retirement or pension plan, in line with local norms.

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.

  • Generous PTO policy, in line with local norms.

The salary range for this position is $200,000 - $250,000 per year, depending on experience, skills, qualifications, and location. This range represents our good faith estimate of the compensation for this role at the time of posting. Total compensation may also include equity in the form of stock options.

We are committed to pay equity and transparency.
