What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Electrical Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Electrical Engineer, you need a deep understanding of electrical systems design, project management, and relevant engineering principles, typically backed by a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools like MATLAB or PSpice, and familiarity with industry standards are essential. Leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication are standout soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and managing complex projects. These skills ensure successful project delivery, innovation, and adherence to safety and quality standards in engineering environments.

What types of projects and team collaborations can a Senior Electrical Engineer expect in this role?

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will often lead or contribute to complex projects such as designing electrical systems for buildings, developing new products, or optimizing manufacturing processes. You’ll collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams that may include mechanical engineers, project managers, architects, and contractors to ensure all electrical components integrate seamlessly with broader project requirements. Regular responsibilities include overseeing junior engineers, reviewing technical drawings, conducting site visits, and ensuring compliance with safety and industry standards. This role offers opportunities to mentor others, manage project timelines, and drive innovation within the team.

What does a Senior Electrical Engineer do?

A Senior Electrical Engineer designs, develops, and oversees the installation and maintenance of electrical systems and components. They often lead project teams, ensure compliance with safety and industry standards, and troubleshoot complex electrical issues. In addition to technical work, they may mentor junior engineers and collaborate with other departments to deliver projects on time and within budget. Their expertise is crucial in sectors like construction, manufacturing, and energy.

What is the difference between Senior Electrical Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectSenior Electrical EngineerElectrical Engineer

Job description

About Fluidstack
At Fluidstack, we build the compute, data centers, and power that will fuel artificial superintelligence. We supply GWs of compute capabilities to the world's biggest AI Labs at industry-defining speeds.
Our team is small, fast, and obsessed with quality. We own outcomes end-to-end, challenge assumptions, and treat our customers' problems as our own. No task is beneath anyone here.
There are a few thousand people who will shape the trajectory of superintelligence. Come and be one of them.
About the Role
We are seeking an Electrical Engineer with a comprehensive understanding of end-to-end data center electrical design to join our team. This role covers the full power delivery chain - from MV distribution, to different LV distribution topologies all the way to rack-level.
You'll provide technical oversight of end-to-end electrical designs for large-scale data centers, ensuring design quality, code compliance, and alignment with Fluidstack's technical standards across all levels of the power distribution chain. You'll contribute to the development of internal design standards, specifications, and best practices for data center electrical systems.
This role is critical to maintaining design quality and consistency across a rapidly scaling portfolio of projects as we drive toward our 10GW deployment target.
Basic Qualifications
  • 8+ years of experience in data centers electrical design or other mission-critical facilities, with exposure to the full power distribution chain from utility feed through rack-level delivery.
  • Prior experience at a hyperscale operator (AWS, Google, Meta, Microsoft) or major mission-critical design firm designing for hyperscale environments.
  • Solid understanding of major data center electrical topologies (2N, N+1, catcher bus, distributed-redundant) and the ability to articulate the trade-offs between them.
  • Familiarity with relevant codes and standards including NEC (NFPA 70), TIA-942, NFPA 110, IEEE 446, NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584.
Nice To Haves
  • Experience with high-density compute environments (AI/ML, HPC) and the unique electrical demands of GPU-heavy workloads is a plus.
  • Familiarity with EPMS/BMS integration, liquid cooling electrical distribution, and ASHRAE TC 9.9 thermal guidelines is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred, or ability to obtain within 18 months.
  • Proficiency with tools such as Revit MEP, AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, SKM PowerTools, and/or Bluebeam Revu.

Benefits
  • Competitive total compensation package (cash + equity).
  • Retirement or pension plan, in line with local norms.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Generous PTO policy, in line with local norms.

The base salary range for this position is $200,000 - $270,000 per year, depending on experience, skills, qualifications, and location. This range represents our good faith estimate of the compensation for this role at the time of posting. Total compensation may also include equity in the form of stock options.
We are committed to pay equity and transparency.
