Flexential Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, problem-solving, and engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with industry-specific software such as CAD tools, simulation platforms, and, in some fields, certifications like FE or PE is often required. Strong communication, teamwork, and critical thinking skills set exceptional engineers apart. These abilities ensure effective project delivery, innovative solutions, and smooth collaboration in technical environments.

How do engineers typically collaborate with other departments during a project?

Engineers often work closely with professionals from various departments such as product management, design, and quality assurance to ensure project requirements are met. Collaboration usually involves regular meetings to align on goals, discuss technical constraints, and review progress. Effective communication and teamwork are key, as engineers may need to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical colleagues and incorporate feedback from different stakeholders. This cross-functional approach helps ensure that projects are delivered efficiently and meet all necessary standards.

What does an engineer do?

An engineer applies principles of science and mathematics to develop solutions for technical problems. They design, build, and test products, systems, or structures while considering efficiency, safety, and cost. Engineers can work in a variety of fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, and software engineering, each with its own specialized focus. Their work often involves teamwork, problem-solving, and the use of advanced technology.

What is the difference between Engineer vs Technician?

Common Search/ComparisonEngineer vs Technician

Engineers typically hold a bachelor's degree and focus on designing, analyzing, and managing projects. Technicians usually have technical diplomas and handle hands-on installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. While engineers plan and oversee, technicians implement and support. Both roles are essential in engineering projects, but they differ in education, responsibilities, and work environment.

  • Proactively engage strategic customers during pre-sales cycles to anticipate long-term architectural needs, business drivers, growth plans, and infrastructure risks.
  • Architect non-standard, highly complex physical infrastructure solutions, ensuring alignment with customer priorities, internal facility capabilities, and long-term platform strategy.
  • Lead customer requirement-gathering sessions and executive workshops, translating technical constraints into clear architectural approaches and business narratives.
  • Provide executive-level technical storytelling and solution justification during RFP responses, design workshops, and final customer selection processes.

  • Perform advanced technical evaluations, modeling, and design validation for solutions requiring non-standard engineering or novel approaches.
  • Influence product strategy, infrastructure investment decisions, and long-range capacity and resilience planning through customer insight and technical research.
  • Act as an informal technical leader across Architecture, Engineering, Product, Operations, and Sales organizations without formal authority.
  • Translate complex infrastructure designs into quantified business outcomes, including ROI, TCO, and risk analysis.
  • Serve as a primary external technical evangelist, as appropriate based on business needs and individual strengths, representing the company at conferences, industry panels, standards bodies, and customer executive briefings.
  • Author white papers, technical briefs, and thought leadership content that position the company as an industry leader in data center and interconnection infrastructure.
  • Initiate and drive the development of internal tools, calculators, design frameworks, and enablement materials for Solutions Engineering & Architecture teams.

  • Proven ability to translate engineering complexity into business outcomes such as ROI, TCO, and risk quantification.
  • Demonstrated experience presenting at industry events or authoring externally facing technical content.
  • Exceptional communication skills across executive, customer, and engineering audiences.
  • Demonstrated history of influencing cross-functional strategy and technical direction without formal authority.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent professional certification.
  • Experience working with industry standards bodies such as ASHRAE, Uptime Institute, ANSI/BICSI, or similar organizations.
  • Experience reviewing or developing commissioning scripts, basis-of-design documents, and MEP construction drawings.
