    Job description

Powering the world. Protecting its most vital resources.
What if your next engineering challenge helped modernize some of North America's most critical power generation assets?

Emerson Power & Water Solutions is a global leader in power and water automation, trusted across more than 60 countries and supporting over 1.4 million MW of generating capacity worldwide. As power producers work to modernize aging infrastructure, improve reliability, and strengthen grid resilience, Emerson engineers are helping shape the future of power generation through advanced automation and control technologies.

Emerson is seeking a Senior Controls Engineer - Gas Turbine Solutions to join our team in Latham, NY.

This is not a role focused on maintaining existing systems. It is an opportunity to solve complex control challenges, modernize legacy turbine controls, and develop innovative automation solutions for power generation facilities across North America. You will work on high-impact gas turbine retrofit projects utilizing Emerson's industry-leading Ovation Distributed Control System (DCS) platform, helping customers improve reliability, operational flexibility, and long-term performance.

You'll join a highly specialized engineering team where technical expertise is valued, ideas are welcomed, and engineers are empowered to influence project outcomes. Whether you're developing advanced control strategies, leading customer design discussions, troubleshooting commissioning challenges, or helping define engineering best practices, your work will directly impact critical infrastructure that millions of people depend on every day.

If you enjoy solving difficult technical problems, working alongside experienced controls professionals, and seeing your engineering solutions deployed in real-world operating power plants, we'd love to hear from you.

In This Role, Your Responsibilities Will Be:
    • Lead the design, development, and implementation of gas turbine control system solutions for modernization and retrofit projects.
    • Apply expertise in turbine control philosophy, startup sequencing, combustion control, fuel management, protection systems, and operational optimization.
    • Develop, configure, document, and test control logic, automation applications, and operator interface solutions utilizing Emerson's Ovation platform.
    •  Serve as a technical resource throughout the project lifecycle, supporting engineering design, customer reviews, testing activities, commissioning, and startup.
    • Collaborate directly with customers, project managers, field engineers, and cross-functional engineering teams to deliver successful project outcomes.
    • Diagnose and resolve complex control system and operational issues using real-world plant data and engineering analysis.
    • Lead and participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), system integration activities, and onsite commissioning efforts.
    • Support the continuous improvement of engineering standards, software libraries, testing methodologies, and best practices.
    • Provide technical mentorship and knowledge sharing within the engineering organization.
    • Help customers navigate modernization strategies by contributing technical expertise and practical operational insight.

    Who You Are:

You build effective working relationships and collaborate openly across teams. You communicate technical information clearly and seek to understand customer needs. You take ownership of your work, follow through on commitments, and approach challenges with curiosity and a desire to learn. You value feedback and actively develop your technical and professional skills.

For This Role, You Will Need:
    • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, related STEM field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • 5+ years of experience in controls engineering, automation, power generation, or a related industrial environment.
    • Experience designing, configuring, testing, or commissioning industrial control systems.
    • Understanding of control logic development, process automation principles, and troubleshooting methodologies.
    • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex technical problems, identify root causes, and develop effective solutions.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical stakeholders.
    • Ability to travel up to 20% throughout North America to support customer projects.
    • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future. This is not a position for which sponsorship will be provided. Individuals with temporary visas such as E, F-1 (including those with OPT or CPT), H-1, H-2, L-1, B, J or TN, or who need sponsorship for work authorization now or in the future, are not eligible.
Preferred Qualifications That Set You Apart:
    • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
    • Experience supporting gas turbine, combustion turbine, combined-cycle, or thermal power generation facilities.
    • Experience with Emerson Ovation, GE Mark VIe, Siemens SPPA-T3000, ABB Symphony, Foxboro, or other power generation control platforms.
    • Knowledge of gas turbine control philosophies, including startup sequencing, combustion control, fuel management, load control, turbine protection systems, and performance optimization.
    • Experience leading software testing, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), commissioning, startup, or other customer-facing technical activities.
    • Experience with control system integration, application development, system validation, and troubleshooting in industrial automation environments.
    • Knowledge of power plant modernization, retrofit projects, and critical infrastructure industries.
    • Experience serving as a technical lead, mentoring engineers, or providing technical guidance across project teams.
