Associate Attorney - General Liability

Associate Attorney - General Liability Remote or Hybrid in California
Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated Associate Attorney specializing in General Liability defense to join our civil litigation team. The ideal candidate will handle a diverse caseload of personal injury and general liability matters, manage client relationships, prepare and argue motions, and collaborate with partners and support staff to achieve favorable outcomes. This role offers opportunities for professional growth in a collegial, fast-paced environment focused on high-quality advocacy and client service.
Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of general liability and personal injury defense matters from intake through resolution, including discovery, motion practice, settlement negotiations, and trial preparation.
  • Draft and file pleadings, motions, responses, and other court documents in state and federal courts.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on complex liability and procedural issues.
  • Prepare witnesses, take and defend depositions, and coordinate expert witnesses and investigators.
  • Communicate regularly with clients, insurers, and opposing counsel to provide case updates and strategic recommendations.
  • Develop case strategies in collaboration with partners and senior attorneys, including risk assessment and settlement evaluation.
  • Represent clients at mediations, hearings, and, when necessary, jury trials.
  • Supervise and mentor junior associates, paralegals, and legal assistants; delegate tasks and review work product to ensure quality and timeliness.
  • Maintain accurate case files and billing records in accordance with firm policies and ethical rules.
  • Participate in business development activities, including client pitches, networking, and contributing to practice group initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and active bar admission in the hiring jurisdiction.
  • 2+ years of experience in civil litigation defense with a focus on general liability and personal injury matters; more experienced candidates will also be considered.
  • Proven trial experience or significant motion practice and courtroom exposure preferred.
  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills, with experience drafting pleadings, motions, and appellate documents.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a heavy caseload, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with discovery procedures, evidence rules, and civil procedure in state and federal courts.
  • Comfortable working with insurers and understanding of insurance coverage and indemnity issues.
  • Excellent client relationship and communication skills, with a commitment to client service and ethical practice.
  • Ability to mentor junior staff and collaborate effectively within a team-oriented firm culture.
  • Proficiency with case management software, e-billing systems, and legal research tools (e.g., Westlaw, Lexis).
