The Mechanical Analysis and Test (MA&T) Department is responsible for ensuring structural and thermal design robustness across the Raytheon portfolio of products.  From preliminary concepts to fielded weapon system support, MA&T delivers innovative structural and thermal engineering solutions utilizing methods ranging from classical fundamental & empirically based techniques to state-of-the-art finite element methods leveraging industry leading commercial tools; all complimented and validated by tests executed in a manner to ensure cost effective yet technically balanced solutions.

Raytheon is seeking a mid-level career Senior Hardware Test Engineer to join the Mechanical Analysis and Test Department.  In this role you will be responsible for comprehensive test support during all phases of programs including development and production. Hardware Testing will cover a wide range of difficult problems, requiring solutions that are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organization objectives. The types of Hardware Tests include: Proof of Design, Risk Mitigation, Proof of Manufacturing, Environmental Confidence Testing, Environmental Qualification, and Engineering Tests on operating and non-operating hardware.  Additionally, Hardware Test personnel develop environmental stress screening requirements and provide rapid response factory production support. You will be expected to meet the test objectives and will be held accountable for completing the work within the agreed upon cost and schedule. The customers of this position will include internal personnel and programs as well as external Government(s) personnel and programs.

What You Will Do

  • Perform instrumentation planning and test conduct of all Hardware Tests including vibration, mechanical shock, temperature, altitude, humidity, and structural testing
  • Dynamic and thermal data acquisition and analysis
  • Provide test fixture design coordination
  • Work independently and take ownership of program/project to achieve schedule, financial, and technical goals
  • Prepare test plans, schedules, test reports, and technical documentation of project work assigned
  • Work directly with design engineering, structural analysis personnel, manufacturing engineering, and commercial customers
  • Mentor and provide test guidance to junior section members
  • Provide technical expertise to programs as needed
  • Factory and supplier testing support domestically and internationally
  • Generate detailed, archival technical reports
  • Travel to test sites to support test or design discussion (depending on work assignment)
  • Act as a technical leader (help define and develop MA&T department technical processes and tools) and lead teams to meet program milestones
  • Travel to domestic Raytheon sites, suppliers, and government facilities

The Senior Mechanical Engineer – Hardware Test Engineer job is in Andover, MA and Marlborough, MA and the position is onsite.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience. In absence of a degree, 9+ years of experience. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for additional years of experience
  • Experience in Hardware and Environmental Testing (i.e. Dynamic Shock/Vibration, Climatic, Structural)
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • An advanced degree
  • Proficiency with Siemens LMS Simcenter/Test.Lab and Unholtz-Dickie vibration control systems/software
  • Hands-on mechanical aptitude and willingness to work in a lab environment
  • Experience with Environmental Stress Screening (ESS) vibration and thermal profile development
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: Signal processing, data acquisition, field test instrumentation, or structural testing
  • Strong working knowledge of specifications and requirements with the ability to report compliance for Thermal and Vibration ESS, HALT, and HASS testing
  • Proficiency in Modal Test execution
  • Experience using military standards including MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-202, MIL-STD-883 MIL-STD-167, and MIL-STD-901
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word/Excel/PowerPoint/Project)
  • Skilled in project management with the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines, non-technical disciplines, and suppliers to resolve technical issues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness for international travel to Middle East, Asia, and Europe to foreign sites, suppliers, and facilities
  • Experience in structural testing: planning, organization, execution, data reduction and correlation
  • Experience with dynamic shock and vibration analysis
  • Experience with Matlab
  • Strong interpersonal skills working in a team environment
  • Experience presenting to external customers
