Senior Process Engineer

Location: Richland, WA

Contract Details
  • Position Type: Contract
  • Contract Duration: 6 months (with potential for extension or conversion to full-time employee)
  • Start: June 29, 2026
  • Pay Rate: $70.00-$77.00 / Hour (USD)
  • Travel Requirements: Up to 25% travel to support projects

Job Summary

Our Federal group is looking for a Senior Process Engineer to support our growing work in the DOE and DOD. This position requires an experienced and competent individual capable of successfully solving difficult problems that require adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. The candidate must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered. The position may require travel to support projects, estimated at 25%.

Key Responsibilities
  • Have experience with nuclear system design, working with Safety Class or Safety Significant systems and working under a NQA-1 program, or have experience with energetics or explosives system design (synthesis, handling, mixing, and charging)
  • Have experience applying nuclear, chemical or explosive-safety requirements into designs
  • Have experience in project execution, from initial process studies, support of project cost estimates, through detailed design into EPC project execution
  • Have a clear understanding of the steps of project development (e.g. front-end engineering design) and level of detail required in each step of project development
  • Independently develop PFDs, P&IDs, complete equipment sizing and specifications, develop instrument process data and specifications
  • Demonstrate leadership ability at the discipline level on a multidiscipline project team
  • Develop process models with commercially available programs (Aspen, Hysys, ChemCAD) or by building custom models in Excel
  • Support business development efforts by developing engineering estimates and supporting proposal development
  • Coordinate with and guide junior staff, with mentorship responsibilities at the senior level
Required Skills
  • Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures
  • Strong knowledge of process design codes (ASME, ANSI, API, PIP, NACE)
  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members; ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills; ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications
  • Ability to travel
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoE or DoD Security Clearance
  • DOE and/or DOD project experience
  • Experience working under NQA-1 programs
  • Background in nuclear facility design
  • Ability to mentor and guide junior engineers
Preferred Skills
  • Strong computer skills including process simulation software (i.e. Hysys and/or Aspen, HTRI)
  • EPC project experience
  • Prior work in NQA-1 environments
  • Experience with glovebox design
  • Experience with nuclear fuel processing facilities
  • Exposure to HALEU (High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium)
  • Exposure to TerraPower (relevant industry keyword)
Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program and 7 years of process engineering experience - Required
  • *Or* Bachelor's Degree in Chemical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and 7 years of process engineering experience - Required
  • *Or* Master's Degree in Chemical Engineering and 6 years of process engineering experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License - Preferred
Required Experience
  • 7 years of process engineering experience (with Bachelor's Degree pathway) or 6 years of process engineering experience (with Master's Degree pathway)
  • Experience in project execution, from initial process studies and project cost estimates through detailed design into EPC project execution
Nice-to-Have Experience
  • Hands-on nuclear design experience, including direct work with specialized containment systems (gloveboxes)
Important Notes
  • Security Clearance is not required at the start of the engagement; however, the candidate must be eligible and able to obtain a DoE or DoD Security Clearance if required based on project requirements.
  • This role may be extended or converted to a full-time employee (FTE) for the right candidate.
