    Job description

    Responsibilities and Duties

    Alberta Health Services is currently seeking the services of an independently licensed physician to assist in the management of medical inpatients in General Surgery under the Surgery Division at the University of Alberta Hospital in the Edmonton Zone.

    The position will entail assessment and treatment of patients admitted to UAH Acute Care Emergency Surgical Service (ACES). The ACES physician will respond to the medical needs of the (ACES) patients as they arise over the course of the Physician's shift. They will participate in daily rounds of the patients on the Acute Care General Surgical service; respond to related consultations in the Emergency Department and inpatient units; perform minor surgical procedures such as central line placement, minor excisions, l & D of abscesses, etc. They will perform patient admission history and physical examination, in consultation with the attending physician.  Complete the appropriate documentation of patient progress, treatment and discharge summaries in accordance with Alberta Health Services policies and guidelines; work with the nursing staff and other health care professionals as a team to enhance the total care of the patient. Discuss the patient's progress with the patient and/or family members as appropriate; participate in the teaching/education of various health care disciplines as required and other such related services as may reasonably be required from time to time. 

    The hours of work will be to a maximum of 70 hours of service a week, the hours of which will be 0700 - 1700 Monday to Sunday but may include evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.

    Qualifications & Experience:

     Successful Candidates will have a functional knowledge of resources and challenges in Alberta's primary health care system. This knowledge will be supported by the candidate having completed a two-year Family Medicine Residency and by ongoing community primary care experience.

    We are particularly interested in candidates who have superior interpersonal skills with a demonstrated commitment to teamwork and peer relationships. The successful candidate should be committed to fulfilling clinical and non-clinical duties as a representative of Family Medicine.

    The successful candidate must be eligible for certification with the College of Family Physicians and of Canada and for medical licensure in the province of Alberta. This position is NOT eligible for AHS sponsorship of a College of Physicians and Surgeons Practice Readiness Assessment.
