The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is seeking to hire three (3) student assistants to support DTSC's Hazardous Waste Management Plan Unit in implementation of recommendations from the 2026 Hazardous Waste Management Plan and data gaps identified in the 2023 Hazardous Waste Management Report. The student assistants will research and collect data about communities around hazardous waste generators and destination facilities utilizing tools like ArcGIS, zoning maps, and land use categories.

Employment
This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause.
Depending on the type of position you are applying for, a pre-employment background check consisting of one or more of the following may be conducted: employment history, professional references, criminal check: educational verification (degree, license, or official transcript) or DMV clearance. Prerequisites
Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (Fall, Spring and Winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Students must be enrolled in at least: six-semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduate students; four-semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting.
Majors/Fields of Study
Data Science, Environmental Policy Analysis & Planning, Environmental Science & Management, Environmental Studies, Geography, Natural Sciences, Public Health, or Urban Land Development.
Work Schedule
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday - Friday, between 8 AM - 5 PM. The final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor.
Additional Work Schedule
Student Assistant employees generally work up to 20 hours per work week (Monday- Friday) during the academic year. During academic breaks, students may have the opportunity to work additional hours, up to 40 hours per week, depending on operational needs and available funding.
Compensation
Undergraduate Student: $18.27 to $28.17 per hour.
Graduate Student: $21.49 to $33.53 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications

• Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), calendar management tools, and data entry systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience responding to inquiries via phone and email in a professional setting.
• Experience performing administrative or program support tasks, including tracking, processing, or maintaining records.
• Experience reviewing information, identifying issues, and applying established guidelines or procedures.
• Experience working with databases, spreadsheets, or tracking systems.
• Ability to work with internal teams and external stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Utilize facility identification and location information to obtain destination facility information using systems such as Hazardous Waste Tracking System (HWTS), EnviroStor, and DTSC's PV module annual report.
• Incorporate hazardous waste generator information into the geographic analysis to address public comments and recommendations from the 2023 Hazardous Waste Management Report.
• Conduct geographic analysis of both hazardous waste generators and destination facilities to provide a complete understanding of potential impacts from hazardous waste management.
• Identify and evaluate recurring hazardous waste streams to manage the large number of generators and focus on consistent waste generation patterns.
• Select and analyze specific generators that produce recurring waste streams to provide targeted, meaningful insights.
• Recommend additional industries or waste streams to include.
• Identify any extra resources that could support the work.

Physical Requirements

Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office environment.
The office location will be at 1001 I Street, Sacramento, CA 95814.
