The Opportunity:

Position will be responsible for providing daily support, maintenance and enhancement of software applications used in refinery operations. This role is crucial for ensuring that the technology supporting the refinery processes is efficient, reliable, and aligned with the business objectives. The position involves close collaboration within other IT groups, corporate personnel, 3rd party vendors, engineering, and operations teams to ensure that all applications are functioning optimally, build continuous improvements and meeting the needs of the refinery.  Will provide support of critical production systems, 7x24, to ensure continuous system availability.

Responsibilities:

  • Configure, implement and maintain critical refinery applications
  • Collect, interpret and document requirements to develop new or modify existing solutions.
  • Develop and implement automation system changes and enhancements. 
  • Provide support of critical production automation systems, 7 days-a-week, 24 hours a day, to ensure continuous availability. 
  • Perform research and maintenance activity, including vendor coordination to ensure that expected service levels and objectives are met.
  • Maintain broad understanding of information technology and business processes in order to assess impact and prioritize activities. 
  • Responsible for solving difficult to complex technical issues.
  • Expected to continually expand scope of knowledge.
  • Expected to work effectively with other I/S disciplines and operations team members, and bridge gaps as necessary.
  • This role is typically based in an office environment which involves some days of working at the local office and some days at the refinery in Burnaby.
  • The job involves being on call to address critical issues that arise outside of regular working hours.
  • Must be willing to work overtime when needed, including occasional weekend work

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; extensive work experience with refinery applications and systems support may be considered in lieu of degree.
Experience Requirements:
  • 3+ years of relevant technical experience with application support. Experience in the oil and gas industry, particularly in refinery operations, is highly preferred.
  • Effective analytical and complex problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to work under pressure  and prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently, managing time and schedule to meet appropriate deadlines.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Customer-focused with a commitment to service excellence.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn new technologies and processes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for communication with a diversified user community and outside vendors. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to identify an issue, analyze and research problems, and formulate a solution
  • Available for 24 x 7 support as needed
  • Ability to take direction from supervisor and work in a team environment.
Preferred:
  • Strong understanding of refinery processes and the software applications that support them
  • Experience supporting refinery applications including LIMS, process historians, yield accounting, maintenance planning, turnaround planning 
  • Basic knowledge of petroleum operations and industry terminology
  • Working knowledge of networks and Microsoft Windows
  • Relational Databases, such as SQL or Oracle and PL/SQL
  • Linux, Unix, or QNX
  • MS Office Products
