Job description


KOMO in Seattle, WA is currently seeking a Broadcast Engineer to provide technical support to KOMO and KUNS. This position involves installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting various electronic systems and equipment associated with television broadcasting, including computers, servers, video and audio equipment, and broadcast transmission systems. The successful candidate will play a vital role in ensuring seamless operations and maintaining the high standards of our facilities.
Responsibilities include:
  • Provide excellent customer service to end users and collaborate with various station departments on new equipment installations.
  • Design, install and document new broadcast systems and equipment as assigned.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on a wide range of broadcasting equipment, such as television transmitters, receivers, cameras, switchers, video servers, production automation, graphic systems, audio equipment, and routers.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to operational users, ensuring prompt resolution of any issues.
  • Contribute to budget planning and provide necessary information for the implementation of new systems.
  • Consult and communicate with engineering management and fellow engineers on technical matters as required.
  • Create accurate engineering signal flow diagrams for CAD documentation of all technical system work.
  • Adhere to engineering standards and practices during all technical work and equipment installations.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities during weekend, early morning and late live newscasts include:
  • Coordinate live shot and IFB routing utilizing iNews, route, initialize and record feeds, QC feeds to ensure they conform to station requirements.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Applicants must possess a strong technical aptitude, fundamental knowledge on Audio Video technology, networking and IT systems and be willing to undergo training on station systems and equipment.
  • This role is scheduled to work (4/10 hour) morning shifts in office in the morning, starting at 3:45AM.
  • Candidate must be flexible with their work schedule and be willing to work overtime, including on-call, nights, weekends, and holidays, as necessary.
  • Experience using AutoCAD to generate wiring diagrams and knowledge of broadcast wiring practices and procedures is highly preferred.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently without direct supervision.
  • Proficient in reading and understanding technical materials.
  • Capacity to concentrate for extended periods of time.
  • Capable of lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Associate degree (AA) in electronics or equivalent technical training preferred.
  • The ideal candidate should demonstrate a solid comprehension of computer operating systems, understand computer hardware, the fundamentals of network architecture and systems administration. Additionally, familiarity with virtualized infrastructure such as VMware, Microsoft Azure, and AWS is preferred.

The hourly compensation range for this role is $31.53 to $33.53. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate's relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location. Full time positions are eligible for benefits that include participation in a retirement plan, quarterly and annual incentive plan bonuses, life and disability insurance, health, dental and vision plans, flexible spending accounts, 15 paid vacation days, 2 paid personal days, 9 paid holidays, 40 hours of paid sick leave, parental leave, and employee stock purchase plan.
