Job description

Optomi, in partnership with a premier tech start-up, is seeking a Founding Product Designer for a long-term contract opportunity based in Austin, TX.

This is a highly hands-on opportunity for an experienced product designer who is comfortable stepping into an early-stage product, evaluating what exists today, and helping shape both the product experience and the design foundation moving forward. The right person will be able to navigate ambiguity, move quickly, create structure where needed, and remain flexible as priorities evolve.

Location: Austin, TX (Remote to start, transitioning to hybrid once local office is established)

Duration: Long-term contract (6 months to start, with strong potential for extension or conversion)

  • Open to a part-time structure (20 hours/week, consistent schedule)

What You Will Do

  • Evaluate the current product experience and identify opportunities to improve usability, navigation, structure, and overall product clarity
  • Redesign and improve key workflows across a cybersecurity platform used to identify and surface threats from multiple data sources
  • Establish information architecture and taxonomy that make complex product content easier to navigate and understand
  • Rapidly create wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to test ideas and support fast-moving product decisions
  • Partner closely with a small engineering team to iterate on product concepts and bring designs to implementation
  • Conduct research and facilitate workshops to better understand user needs, product gaps, and business priorities
  • Create a lightweight, scalable design system with reusable components, interaction patterns, and UI standards
  • Help translate evolving brand direction into a consistent product experience
  • Support content and UX writing needs, including voice, tone, labels, and in-product messaging
  • Balance structure and consistency with the flexibility required in an early-stage startup environment
  • Use AI-assisted tools and workflows to accelerate exploration, prototyping, and collaboration

The Right Candidate Will Have:

  • Strong end-to-end product design experience across UX, interaction design, information architecture, and visual design
  • Experience evaluating and improving an existing product or platform rather than only designing net-new experiences
  • Strong information architecture and taxonomy skills, particularly around complex navigation and data-heavy workflows
  • Ability to quickly create wireframes, mockups, and prototypes to support fast product decisions
  • Experience working in ambiguous, fast-paced startup or innovation environments
  • Strong research orientation, including user discovery, stakeholder interviews, and workshop facilitation
  • Experience establishing lightweight design systems, reusable patterns, and product standards
  • Ability to support content design needs such as voice, tone, and product messaging
  • Comfort collaborating closely with engineers in a highly iterative environment
  • Experience using modern AI-assisted design and development workflows, including tools such as Figma, Claude, Cursor, or similar platforms
  • Strong communication skills, adaptability, and a collaborative personality
  • Cybersecurity, threat intelligence, geolocation, social media security, or data-intensive product experience is a plus
