Position Overview

We are seeking a licensed California Clinical Laboratory Scientist to support a toxicology laboratory in Santa Rosa, California. The Clinical Scientist II will perform, review, and certify clinical laboratory testing while ensuring compliance with California laboratory regulations, CLIA requirements, internal procedures, and established quality standards.

The ideal candidate will have experience reviewing mass spectrometry data in a toxicology laboratory and a strong commitment to laboratory safety, regulatory compliance, scientific accuracy, and quality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical laboratory testing in accordance with approved standard operating procedures, California requirements, and CLIA regulations.
  • Conduct the final review, certification, and release of laboratory test results.
  • Apply scientific knowledge and sound judgment to evaluate the accuracy, validity, and defensibility of test results.
  • Review calibration and quality-control results to confirm that established specifications have been met before releasing donor test results.
  • Investigate inconsistent or questionable laboratory results and escalate findings to the appropriate teams.
  • Recommend corrective actions when quality-control shifts, trends, or testing inconsistencies are identified.
  • Halt testing or production activities when necessary to protect result quality, patient safety, or regulatory compliance.
  • Review LC/MS/MS and GC/MS analytical data within a toxicology testing environment.
  • Operate, clean, maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate analytical equipment according to manufacturer specifications and CLIA requirements.
  • Maintain complete and accurate documentation related to calibration, quality control, equipment maintenance, specimen handling, investigations, and result certification.
  • Safely handle hazardous materials and follow all environmental, health, and safety requirements.
  • Promptly report laboratory incidents, near misses, chemical spills, and potential safety concerns.
  • Assist with investigations involving specimen handling, analytical testing, production issues, and other quality events.
  • Support the development, review, and approval of laboratory standard operating procedures and testing protocols.
  • Train, supervise, and support unlicensed testing personnel and document their continued competency in accordance with California requirements.
  • Follow new and revised laboratory procedures as directed by laboratory leadership.
  • Support Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement activities consistent with the Laboratory Quality Plan.
  • Function as a Technical Supervisor under CLIA regulations when required.
  • Provide general or direct supervision of laboratory and clerical personnel in the absence of designated laboratory leadership.
  • Complete continuing education and professional training necessary to maintain an active California CLS license.

Required Qualifications

  • Active California license under the Business and Professions Code as one of the following:
    • Clinical Laboratory Scientist Generalist
    • Clinical Toxicologist Scientist
    • Clinical Chemist Scientist
  • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline.
  • Strong pipetting and general laboratory skills.
  • Proficiency with computers and the ability to learn laboratory information management systems.
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory quality-control, calibration, documentation, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong commitment to laboratory safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to coach, train, and provide direction to peers and laboratory personnel.
  • Ability to work effectively in a flexible laboratory and office environment with frequent interruptions and competing requests.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least two years of experience in a toxicology laboratory using mass spectrometry.
  • Experience reviewing and certifying LC/MS/MS and/or GC/MS data.
  • Five or more years of general clinical laboratory experience with demonstrated knowledge of toxicology may be considered in place of direct toxicology laboratory experience.
  • Previous experience functioning as a CLIA Technical Supervisor.
  • Experience supporting laboratory quality investigations, corrective actions, and performance-improvement activities.
