Job Summary/Description:

Action News 5 is looking for an Assignment Manager to serve as the nerve center of our newsroom, monitoring police scanners, fielding tips, coordinating reporters and crews, and making real-time decisions about what stories to cover around the clock. The role demands strong communication, curiosity, and the ability to stay calm under pressure, especially during breaking news, while collaborating closely with producers, reporters, photographers, and managers. This position offers an opportunity to play a critical behind-the-scenes role in local news gathering and coverage.

Duties/Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

- Gather and organize press releases, emails, phone calls, and viewer tips
- Identify compelling stories and engage content for all platforms
- Monitor emergency scanners, social media, as well as all broadcast and streaming feeds to quickly and accurately confirm information
- Keep track of crews in the field and communicate with them during daily newsgathering and breaking news
- Collaborate with other managers on content gathering and planning, which includes overseeing daily operations and additional coverage for special events, as needed
- Pitch and develop enterprise stories
- You will monitor multiple social media accounts to gather content and communicate with news makers
- Familiarize yourself with local newsgathering technology and terminology
- Will maintain professional working relationships with newsmakers
- Gather information from multiple sources simultaneously and quickly push it out to anchors, reporters, producers, and digital producers
- Be able to remain calm and level-headed during breaking news situations

Qualifications/Requirements:

- 2+ years of newsroom experience; management experience is a plus
- Bachelor's degree; Communications, Journalism, or related field required
- Valid driver's license with a good driving record
- Excellent communication skills
- Demonstrate solid news judgment
- Strong research skills, including conducting online research using various search engines
- Ability to stay current with national and local news/weather
- Knowledge of the television market, geography, and issues
- Ability to maintain multiple modes of communication and coordinate multiple issues during breaking news and other stressful situations
- Ability to work independently with little supervision
- Willing to work flexible hours and work well with coworkers
- Maintain strong journalistic ethics; maintain professional and ethical conduct at the station and in the community
- Strong initiative and attention to detail
