Embark Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics, and a relevant degree such as in mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Familiarity with data analysis tools like SQL, Excel, Python or R, and experience with visualization platforms such as Tableau or Power BI are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help analysts interpret data insights and present findings clearly to stakeholders. These skills are crucial for transforming raw data into actionable business insights that drive informed decision-making.

What are some common challenges Data Analysts face when working with large datasets, and how are they typically addressed?

Data Analysts often encounter challenges such as data quality issues, missing or inconsistent values, and slow processing times when handling large datasets. These challenges are typically addressed by implementing data cleaning routines, using advanced data management tools, and leveraging programming languages like Python or R for efficient data manipulation. Collaboration with database administrators and IT teams is also common to ensure data integrity and optimize data storage solutions. Staying updated with best practices in data wrangling and visualization helps Data Analysts deliver accurate and actionable insights.

What does a Data Analyst do?

A Data Analyst is responsible for collecting, processing, and analyzing data to help organizations make informed business decisions. They use statistical tools and software to interpret data sets, identify trends, and create visual reports. Data Analysts often collaborate with other departments to provide actionable insights and support strategic planning. Their work helps organizations optimize operations, track performance, and solve business problems using data-driven approaches.

How much does an entry level data analyst make?

Entry-level data analysts typically earn between $55,000 and $70,000 annually, depending on the industry and location. Starting salaries may be higher with relevant skills in SQL, Excel, and data visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI.

What jobs make $3,000 a month without a degree?

Data analysts can sometimes earn around $3,000 per month with relevant skills in data visualization, Excel, and basic statistical tools, even without a formal degree. Entry-level roles or freelance work in data analysis, digital marketing, or customer support may also reach this income level, especially with experience and certifications. However, salaries vary based on location, industry, and skill level.

Will AI replace a data analyst?

AI tools can automate routine data processing and basic analysis tasks, but data analysts are essential for interpreting complex data, making strategic decisions, and providing context. The role of a data analyst involves skills like critical thinking, domain knowledge, and communication that AI cannot fully replicate. Therefore, AI is more likely to augment rather than replace data analysts in the foreseeable future.

What is the difference between Data Analyst vs Data Scientist?

Join Our Business Transformation Team

Help CFOs and controllers turn fragmented data into a connected, governed, and trusted foundation for reporting. As a project lead focused on Workiva Data Management (Wdata), you'll lead clients through the design and implementation of Workiva's data layer that powers SEC, ESG, financial, and operational reporting.

We bring people, process, and technology together:

  • People: We align finance, accounting, and data teams around a single source of truth.

  • Process: We streamline data flows, embed controls, and reduce manual, Excel-driven work.

  • Technology: We design and implement scalable Wdata architectures that integrate with ERPs, data warehouses, and reporting workspaces.

As a Wdata Implementation & Optimization Manager and Project Lead within our Business Transformation practice, you will:

Lead Wdata Implementations End-to-End

  • Own discovery, design, build, testing, and deployment of Wdata solutions that support SEC, ESG, financial close, management reporting, and internal controls use cases.

Design Scalable Data Architectures in Wdata

  • Architect table structures, data models, relationships, and data prep logic to support repeatable, governed data pipelines feeding Workiva workspaces and reports.

Build and Orchestrate Data Pipelines

  • Configure Chains, connectors, and data prep steps to integrate data from ERPs (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Workday, Oracle), GL/subledgers, data warehouses (e.g., Snowflake, Azure), and flat files into Wdata.

Establish Governance, Controls, and Lineage

  • Implement standards for data quality, access, approvals, and lineage so clients can trust the data flowing into their Workiva reports and dashboards.

Run Client Workshops & Requirements Sessions

  • Lead conversations with Controllers, SEC Reporting, FP&A, Finance Transformation, and IT/Data teams to define source systems, mappings, transformation rules, and control points.

Bridge Technical & Functional Teams

  • Translate accounting and reporting requirements into Wdata designs and work closely with data engineers, Workiva configuration specialists, and client IT teams.

Optimize Existing Wdata Environments

  • Assess current-state Wdata implementations, identify gaps or technical debt, and redesign pipelines, tables, and chains for performance, scalability, and maintainability.

Manage Engagement Delivery

  • Plan and manage project scope, timelines, and resources; oversee day-to-day delivery; and ensure clear communication and alignment with client stakeholders.

Develop and Mentor Talent

  • Coach team members on Wdata concepts, Workiva architecture, and consulting best practices; help build Embark's internal Wdata methodology and accelerators.

Champion Innovation & Reuse

  • Leverage templates, patterns, and re-usable components for Wdata implementations; stay current on Workiva's data management roadmap and bring new capabilities into client solutions.

In order to be a good fit for the Wdata Implementation & Optimization Project Lead role, you will have:

Workiva Data Management Expertise

  • Significant hands-on experience implementing Wdata (data tables, data prep, chains, connectors, views, transformations).

  • Proven experience connecting Wdata into one or more Workiva use cases (e.g., SEC reporting, ESG, financial close, SOX, internal management reporting).

Data Integration & Architecture Skills

  • Strong understanding of data modeling, ETL/ELT concepts, and relational structures.

  • Experience integrating ERPs/GLs, subledgers, CRMs, and data warehouses into a central data layer.

  • Comfort working with SQL, data mappings, and transformation logic.

Consulting & Client Leadership

  • Track record leading complex, multi-stakeholder projects in a consulting or advisory environment.

  • Ability to facilitate workshops, manage expectations, and communicate clearly with both executives and technical teams.

Finance & Reporting Acumen

  • Solid understanding of financial close, consolidation, and reporting processes (e.g., SEC reporting, management reporting, FP&A, controls).

  • Ability to connect data design decisions to reporting, compliance, and business outcomes.

Soft Skills

  • Strong problem-solving mindset and comfort with ambiguity.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Collaborative, team-oriented style with a focus on client service and team success.

Success in This Role Looks Like

  • Trusted Data Foundations: Clients rely on Wdata pipelines you designed as the authoritative source for their reporting.

  • Scalable Designs: Solutions are flexible enough to support new entities, new reports, and evolving requirements without constant rework.

  • Happy Stakeholders: Controllers, SEC/ESG leads, FP&A, and IT feel heard, supported, and confident in the solution.

  • Strong Teams: Project teams understand Wdata patterns, follow consistent standards, and grow under your leadership.

Why Embark

Embark is reimagining consulting with a people-first culture and a focus on modern finance, data, and technology. You'll:

  • Lead high-impact Workiva Data Management projects across industries.

  • Help build and scale our Workiva and data practices, methodologies, and accelerators.
