What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), version control systems like Git, and knowledge of software development methodologies are typically required. Excellent teamwork, communication, and adaptability distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure efficient, high-quality software development that meets user needs and adapts to technological changes.

What are some common challenges software engineers face when collaborating on large development teams?

Software engineers working on large teams often encounter challenges with communication, code integration, and maintaining consistent coding standards. Coordinating across multiple developers can lead to merge conflicts and misunderstandings about project requirements or priorities. Adopting tools like version control systems, regular code reviews, and clear documentation helps mitigate these issues. Building strong collaboration skills and proactively seeking clarification are key to ensuring smooth teamwork and project success.

What are Software Engineers?

Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain computer software and systems. They use programming languages, engineering principles, and problem-solving skills to build applications, websites, or software solutions that meet specific needs. Software Engineers may work in a variety of industries, such as technology, finance, healthcare, or entertainment, collaborating with other team members to deliver functional and reliable software. Their role often involves analyzing user requirements, writing code, debugging errors, and continually improving software performance.

What is the difference between Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in CS or related field, certificationsBachelor's degree often preferred, certifications optional
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing, and maintaining software systemsWriting, coding, and implementing software applications
Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and more for system-level rolesCommonly used in app and web development projects
Search IntentUnderstanding roles, responsibilities, and qualificationsLearning about coding, programming, and project work

While both roles involve software creation, Software Engineers typically focus on designing and architecting complex systems, whereas Software Developers mainly concentrate on coding and building specific applications. The roles often overlap, but the Engineer role may require broader system knowledge and design skills.

Job description

Overview
As a Software Engineer II in the Calendar team, you will design and build AI-powered scheduling systems by integrating backend services and Large Language Models (LLMs) with Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and Outlook services. You will deliver modern Microsoft Calendar experiences across Monarch and Microsoft Teams, enabling intelligent coordination through Copilot and Places.
Join Microsoft's Time + Places organization, where we reimagine when, where, and how work happens. Our mission is to leverage cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) to reduce cognitive load and deliver agent-driven solutions that empower individuals and organizations in the hybrid work era.
This role offers opportunities to work on AI-powered scheduling, asynchronous collaboration, and location-aware coordination. You will be part of a team that values craftsmanship, reliability, and user impact-building services that help people reclaim time, connect meaningfully, and achieve more together.
Microsoft's mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. We embrace a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive.
Responsibilities
  • Design and build scalable backend services that power artificial intelligence (AI)-driven scheduling agents supporting millions of daily users.
  • Integrate large language models (LLMs) and machine learning (ML) models to deliver intelligent, context-aware scheduling and coordination experiences.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and AI advancements to enable transformative Copilot experiences for calendar planning and hybrid work scenarios.
  • Leverage Microsoft 365 (M365) Graph data, including personal and organizational time and location information, to power Copilot and agent-based assistance.
  • Collaborate with product managers, designers, and partner teams to define user requirements and deliver intelligent scheduling solutions; participate in design reviews, code reviews, and agile planning processes.
  • Drive architectural decisions and engineering excellence to ensure reliability, performance, and security in alignment with Microsoft's Secure Future Initiative (SFI).
  • Design and implement backend services for Microsoft Calendar experiences across Monarch and Microsoft Teams, integrating deeply with substrate application programming interfaces (APIs), Copilot, and Places.
  • Contribute to planning and execution by identifying dependencies, creating design documents, breaking down larger work items into smaller tasks, and providing accurate estimations with minimal oversight.
  • Act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) to monitor systems, features, and services for degradation, downtime, or interruptions and lead restoration efforts for simple problems.
  • Champion Microsoft culture and values in all aspects of design, collaboration, and delivery.
  • Embody our Culture and Values

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science OR related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Python or Azure.
  • OR equivalent experience.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or related field AND 3+ years engineering experience, OR bachelor's degree and 5+ years' experience, OR equivalent experience, with coding proficiency in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Python, or Azure.
  • Experience building cloud-native applications and services.
  • Problem solving decomposition and presenting efficient solutions through scalable systems design and understanding of distributed systems, APIs, and telemetry.
  • User experience, product craftsmanship, and solving real-world problems.
  • 5+ years of experience in software development using C#, .NET, TypeScript, or similar technologies.
  • Experience using software development agents / assistants to co-develop.
  • Experience with Microsoft Graph, M365 services, or workplace productivity tools.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts, especially in the context of Copilot or agent-based systems.
