Job description

Position Summary

Production Crew for Butler Sports Live is a part-time, student position responsible for various roles during on-campus broadcast; primarily for athletics on ESPN+ and other broadcast partners on campus. This role requires training and expertise in a number of responsibilities on crew. This role and Butler Sports Live provide experiential learning opportunities meant to enhance overall learning outcomes at Butler and provide necessary skills for a range of careers in live sports broadcasting.

Work Schedule

  • Work Hours vary week-to-week depending on the home schedule from Butler Athletics and student availability. 

  • Scheduling is collaborative: Students will be given the season's broadcast schedule and asked for availability via a form for each game. Call sheets are made based on worker availability. 

  • Students can expect to work the following hours per event. Start and end time depends on the start of the event. Normally evenings and weekends. Our peak times are fall and winter seasons with soccer and football through the basketball season. 

    • Soccer = 4.5 to 6.5 hours 

    • Football = 6 to 9 hours 

    • Basketball = 4.5 to 6.5 hours Volleyball (with Tupelo) = 3 to 4 hours 

  • While this role is hourly, the scheduling and crew operation runs similarly to freelancer industry standards and is flexible. This means that students will not be scheduled to work if they are unavailable for an event.

Position Responsibilities

  • Assist with the technical production of Butler Sports Live broadcasts. 

  • Work a number of roles for various broadcasts including: 

    • Production Assistant/Utility 

    • Camera Operator 

    • Audio Operator 

    • Graphics Operator 

    • Replay Operator 

    • Show Director 

    • Show Producer 

    • Timeout Coordinator 

    • Talent Roles (PxP/Analyst/Sideline Reporter) 

    • Other roles as assigned 

  • Select crew will be responsible for all equipment setup. 

  • All crew will be responsible for assisting with teardown after each event.

Required Qualifications

  • Actively Enrolled Student at Butler University 

  • Successful Completion of SPM130 - Sports Production Lab with an A letter grade or special permission to join from the Butler Sports Live General Manager. 

  • Available to work irregular hours including nights and weekends. 

  • Complete required broadcast training before working a live event. 

  • Attend a production meeting/orientation when required. 

  • Arrive for the assigned crew call on time and remain through wrap. 

  • Be able to follow direction from the producer, director, technical director, or supervisor. 

  • Be able to properly care for and maintain broadcast equipment. 

  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of live-production terminology and communication protocols. 

  • Be able to work effectively under time pressure and in a live TV environment. 

  • Maintain professional conduct around coworkers, athletes, coaches, officials, guests, and broadcast partners. 

  • Follow all equipment, venue, and safety procedures. 

  • Be able to lift, carry, or assist with production equipment appropriate to the assigned position. 

  • Notify the supervisor as early as possible if they cannot fulfill an assignment.

Other Expectations

  • Maintain appropriate appearance for Butler Events; this includes not wearing logos from competing Butler Athletics Sponsors or any other teams. 

  • Must wear appropriate shoes such as sneakers, boots and regular closed-toed shoes. No Slides or sandals. 

  • Use saved game footage only for personal reels and resumes. No reposting or rebroadcasting. 

  • Comply with University standards and policies.
