What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Engineering Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Engineering Manager, you need a robust background in engineering principles, leadership experience, and a relevant degree, often complemented by prior management roles. Familiarity with project management tools (such as Jira or Asana), software development methodologies (like Agile), and technical certifications can be highly beneficial. Exceptional communication, conflict resolution, and mentoring skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are vital for effectively guiding teams, delivering projects on time, and fostering an innovative and collaborative engineering environment.

How does a Senior Engineering Manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

A Senior Engineering Manager often splits their time between guiding technical strategy and supporting their team’s professional development. This involves overseeing complex engineering projects, setting clear technical direction, and ensuring best practices are followed, while also mentoring engineers, conducting performance reviews, and fostering a collaborative team culture. Balancing these areas requires strong delegation, prioritization, and communication skills, as well as regularly collaborating with other departments like Product and Design to align goals. Most organizations expect Senior Engineering Managers to actively contribute to both technical and people-focused initiatives, which can be challenging but is essential for team and project success.

What is a Senior Engineering Manager?

A Senior Engineering Manager is a seasoned leader responsible for overseeing multiple engineering teams or large projects within an organization. They manage engineering managers or team leads, set technical direction, and ensure alignment with business goals. Their duties include mentoring staff, driving process improvements, managing budgets, and collaborating with other departments. Senior Engineering Managers play a key role in hiring, performance evaluations, and fostering a productive engineering culture. They typically have extensive industry experience and strong leadership skills.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

-

Blue Origin was founded by Jeff Bezos with the vision of enabling a future where millions of people live and work in space for the benefit of Earth. As one of the world's most ambitious aerospace and technology companies, Blue Origin develops reusable launch vehicles, in-space systems, and advanced propulsion technologies that are reshaping humanity's access to space. We believe in gradual, incremental progress - and in building systems and teams that are safe, reliable, and built to last. Our work spans New Shepard, New Glenn, Blue Moon, and a growing portfolio of programs that demand the highest standards of engineering, operations, and supply chain excellence. At Blue Origin, every role contributes to a mission larger than any single program: a future where the resources of space are available to all.

About This Role

Terawave is a dedicated commercial business unit within Blue Origin Operations, focused on advanced manufacturing and supply chain solutions for next-generation spaceflight systems and infrastructure. The Terawave supply chain team manages a commercially oriented procurement portfolio spanning build-to-print hardware, build-to-specification components, COTS parts, and contract manufacturing partnerships - operating at the pace and discipline required to support high-mix, low-volume aerospace manufacturing at scale. The team's work is directly critical to on-time, on-budget delivery of Blue Origin's most demanding commercial hardware programs across all facilities.

As Senior Procurement Manager, you will hold full ownership of the business unit's supply chain performance - leading a team of Supply Chain Professional Buyers, driving strategic sourcing and long-term agreement execution across the commercial supplier base, and serving as the primary procurement interface for business unit leadership, Blue Origin Senior Management, and cross-functional partners. This is a high-visibility, high-accountability role for a proven procurement leader who thrives in technically complex, commercially driven, and rapidly scaling environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own program-level supply chain performance for the business unit's commercial programs, including accountability for schedule, cost, and Material Estimate at Completion (EAC), with regular reporting to business unit program leadership
  • Direct, mentor, and develop a team of Supply Chain Professional Buyers, managing full lifecycle performance including hiring, goal-setting, and ongoing professional development aligned to the business unit's commercial program priorities and operational tempo
  • Lead strategic sourcing and negotiation of Firm-Fixed Price (FFP) contracts and long-term agreements (LTAs) across the business unit's supplier base, including build-to-print manufacturers, build-to-specification suppliers, COTS vendors, and contract manufacturing partners
  • Develop and maintain business unit-specific procurement policies, procedures, templates, and digital tools to ensure best-in-class accuracy, compliance, and traceability across all commercial procurement activities
  • Analyze material flow data, supplier performance metrics, and internal stakeholder feedback to identify root causes of gaps and implement targeted improvement strategies tailored to the business unit's commercial build-to-print and build-to-specification environments
  • Ensure Supply Chain functions execute detailed plans to achieve business unit program goals; proactively identify risks and deviations in performance metrics and implement mitigation strategies before they impact program milestones
  • Lead rapid resolution of supplier, quality, and material challenges for the business unit's key deliverables, supporting escalation to program and executive leadership when required to protect commercial program commitments
  • Communicate program status, risks, and opportunities through detailed reports and presentations tailored for business unit leadership and cross-functional Blue Origin stakeholders, including Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance

Basic Qualifications (BQs)

Preferred Qualifications (PQs)

The following qualifications will differentiate strong candidates:

Active PMP certification or equivalent formal project management credential demonstrating structured commercial program execution capability Experience with procurement for spacecraft systems, space-rated hardware, or commercial spaceflight programs, including familiarity with the quality, traceability, and reliability standards these programs demand Demonstrated experience structuring and managing long-term agreements (LTAs) with contract manufacturers and build-to-specification suppliers, including should-cost modeling, total cost of ownership analysis, and supplier performance governance Hands-on proficiency with ERP/MRP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle) and advanced procurement digital tools applied to material estimating, Basis of Estimate (BOE) creation, and KPI tracking in a commercial program environment Demonstrated ability to present complex procurement data and risk analysis to senior program or functional leadership stakeholders, including experience developing and delivering program-level briefings to senior management audiences Experience operating in high-mix, low-volume or commercially oriented manufacturing environments, with a track record of adapting FFP sourcing strategies to rapid iteration cycles and evolving build-to-specification requirements
