Benchling Jobs Information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving abilities, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), version control systems like Git, and knowledge of software development methodologies are typically required. Excellent teamwork, communication, and adaptability distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure efficient, high-quality software development that meets user needs and adapts to technological changes.

What are some common challenges software engineers face when collaborating on large development teams?

Software engineers working on large teams often encounter challenges with communication, code integration, and maintaining consistent coding standards. Coordinating across multiple developers can lead to merge conflicts and misunderstandings about project requirements or priorities. Adopting tools like version control systems, regular code reviews, and clear documentation helps mitigate these issues. Building strong collaboration skills and proactively seeking clarification are key to ensuring smooth teamwork and project success.

What are Software Engineers?

Software Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain computer software and systems. They use programming languages, engineering principles, and problem-solving skills to build applications, websites, or software solutions that meet specific needs. Software Engineers may work in a variety of industries, such as technology, finance, healthcare, or entertainment, collaborating with other team members to deliver functional and reliable software. Their role often involves analyzing user requirements, writing code, debugging errors, and continually improving software performance.

What is the difference between Software Engineer vs Software Developer?

AspectSoftware EngineerSoftware Developer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in CS or related field, certificationsBachelor's degree often preferred, certifications optional
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing, and maintaining software systemsWriting, coding, and implementing software applications
Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare, and more for system-level rolesCommonly used in app and web development projects
Search IntentUnderstanding roles, responsibilities, and qualificationsLearning about coding, programming, and project work

While both roles involve software creation, Software Engineers typically focus on designing and architecting complex systems, whereas Software Developers mainly concentrate on coding and building specific applications. The roles often overlap, but the Engineer role may require broader system knowledge and design skills.

Job description

We are rebuilding biotech for the AI era.
When a breakthrough is delayed, the world waits. Getting a molecule from discovery to patients, or a crop from lab to field, involves thousands of slow, manual, disconnected steps. AI has the potential to change this, compressing decades of R&D work into years. But that only happens when clean, structured scientific data and AI are built into how science gets done.
Benchling is the AI platform for biotech R&D. Scientists use Benchling to design experiments, capture structured data, and run AI agents and models directly in their workflows. Over 200,000 scientists around the world trust Benchling to power their most important work, from academic labs to Sanofi, Moderna, and more than half of the world's top 50 biopharma.
We're building an AI scientist for our customers. We can't do that if we haven't built the muscle ourselves. AI fluency is the foundation we build on; it's core to how we work, and we're committed to helping every new hire integrate it into their day-to-day. As part of our interview process, you'll complete a brief AI-focused exercise or discussion so we can understand how you think about and use AI to drive impact in your role. Feel free to reference any tools, platforms, or workflows you use today.

ROLE OVERVIEW

At Benchling, our mission is to empower scientists to accelerate discoveries that change the world. As a Software Engineer on the Developer Platform team, you'll help build the platform that powers our growing ecosystem of scientific applications. You'll work on systems that shape how developers, partners, and scientists interact with Benchling, enabling extensibility, integration, and innovation across the platform.

This team works on a wide range of early- and mid-stage initiatives, including developer APIs, event delivery, AI-powered agents, and platform services that support a growing ecosystem. Because of the breadth of the work, engineers have the opportunity to contribute across many parts of our developer-facing platform and to take on projects that align with both business needs and their own interests and strengths.

You'll collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and engineers across the company to solve challenging problems and build a more scalable, extensible foundation for scientific R&D. Your work will help drive innovation, customization, and seamless integration of third-party solutions that empower scientists to work more efficiently and make groundbreaking discoveries.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Contribute to projects across the software development lifecycle, from early exploration and prototyping through implementation and launch

  • Build and improve APIs, services, and interfaces that integrate with Benchling's growing ecosystem

  • Partner with cross-functional teams to understand user needs and turn them into scalable, thoughtful software solutions

  • Help evolve our platform by sharing ideas, learning quickly, and contributing to technical decisions

  • Write clean, maintainable code and support the reliability and usability of the systems you work on

Check out our engineering blog for some examples of past work across Benchling. Here are some examples of recent and upcoming projects from our team:

  • Event delivery systems for real-time scientific data

  • AI-powered agents and platform infrastructure for life sciences

  • Developer Interfaces & Platform APIs

    • Design, build, and maintain external developer-facing APIs and SDKs that power extensibility in Benchling's platform.

    • Contribute to evolving and scaling our REST and GraphQL APIs, ensuring consistency, performance, and usability for external and internal developers.

  • Bonus: AI Agents & Model Context Protocol (MCP)

    • Contribute to the development of APIs and interfaces that support AI-driven agents like Benchling's Deep Research, Ask, and Compose Agents.

    • Support the development of our Benchling MCP to enable AI agents to interact safely with Benchling's data and APIs.

    • Collaborate with our AI infra / agents teams to support a comprehensive agentic ecosystem.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current enrollment in a BS/MS degree in computer science and/or STEM field with an expected graduation date of Summer 2026, and a target start date of Summer 2026.

  • A prior software engineering internship or similar experience.

  • Strong abilities in problem solving and iterating on feedback.

  • A desire to have ownership over building key pieces of product and/or platform.

  • A product-first approach to building software. You ship code quickly and care about the real world impact of your code.

Nice to haves:

  • Passion for learning about life science.
