Role Summary
Lead two product-focused engineering teams that build reliable, scalable solutions for athenahealth customers on patient payment workflows. This hybrid role is based in Boston, MA and offers the opportunity to shape product delivery, team growth, and technical execution in a collaborative environment. The position is designed for someone with experience managing engineering teams, balancing priorities, and partnering across functions to deliver business outcomes.
Team Summary
athenaCollector is a critical part of the athenaOne platform, helping medical provider organizations manage revenue cycle operations with accuracy and efficiency. The product supports essential workflows across claims, billing, payment processing, and improve financial performance. By automating and streamlining revenue cycle activities specially payment processing at this case, athenaCollector plays an important role in helping healthcare organizations focus more time and attention on patient care.
Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Lead two software engineering teams responsible for delivering payment related product features, platform enhancements, and technical improvements.
  • Collaborate with product management, design, quality engineering, and other stakeholders to define priorities and deliver outcomes.
  • Guide technical decision-making across object-oriented programming languages, relational databases, and modern frameworks in monolith and cloud environments.
  • Drive product development and design efforts that improve customer experience, system reliability, and engineering efficiency.
  • Manage execution across multiple priorities, ensuring timely delivery while maintaining quality and alignment with business goals.
  • Develop team members through coaching, feedback, goal setting, and individualized growth opportunities.
  • Build a healthy team environment by understanding team needs, removing obstacles, and enabling individuals to contribute fully.
  • Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to communicate status, manage dependencies, and support coordinated delivery.
  • Evaluate engineering processes and recommend improvements that strengthen planning, delivery, and operational performance.
  • Apply AI tools and AI-assisted workflows to improve engineering productivity, support faster problem solving, and help the team identify practical ways AI can strengthen day-to-day work.

Additional Job Responsibilities
  • Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and team scaling efforts as needed.
  • Support incident response, root cause analysis, and follow-up improvements when product issues arise.
  • Participate in technical reviews and planning discussions to help shape implementation approaches.
  • Help refine team practices for estimation, prioritization, and sprint execution.
  • Encourage knowledge sharing across the team through documentation, reviews, and collaboration.
  • Support broader engineering initiatives and organizational goals as assigned.
  • Provide input on roadmap planning and technical tradeoffs.
  • Assist in creating a culture of accountability, learning, and continuous improvement.

Expected Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5+ years of experience an engineering leadership role with responsibility for delivery, team development, and execution.
  • 5+ years of core experience in product design and development.
  • Experience in payment processing or complex real time systems is an advantage
  • Experience with modern object-oriented programming languages.
  • Experience working with relational databases.
  • Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks and related technologies.
  • Experience with enterprise monolith applications as well as Cloud based enterprise applications
  • Demonstrated success developing employees professionally and supporting growth opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience leading teams and working effectively with cross-functional stakeholders.

Expected Compensation
$143,000 - $243,000
The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
