Train Conductor Job Summary
We are hiring reliable, experienced Train Conductors to join our growing team of dedicated railroad professionals. The Train Conductor will play a key role in in day-to-day operations and will lead the on-board support staff of the train while it is in motion.
Conductors are vital members of our team and are responsible for coordinating the efforts of the train’s crew on passenger and/or freight trains and communicating effectively with yardmasters and workers engaged in railroad traffic operations to ensure our service is always safe and always on time. Candidates must be willing to submit to a background check and regular drug tests.
Train Conductor Duties and Responsibilities
- Help passengers safely board the train.
- Ensure that baggage is properly secured.
- Check passengers to verify that they are properly ticketed.
- Mark tickets and give receipts.
- Receive payments from passengers if their tickets were not purchased before boarding.
- Clearly announce stations and deliver any other necessary announcements.
- Notify passengers of bad weather or other delays that will impact travel.
- Help evacuate passengers as per safety procedures if need be.
- Assist passengers with physical limitations or other unique situations.
- Address unruly passengers quickly and professionally.
- Monitor loading/unloading of cargo.
- Stay alert for any issue which could affect the safety or security of the passengers or other staff.
- Direct departing passengers regarding disembarkation procedures.
- Coordinate the efforts of train crew.
- Ensure comfort of everyone onboard.
- Help passengers find service areas onboard e.g. the bathroom or where to buy food and drink.
- Discuss all necessary information with the engineer such as route changes, timetable, weather concerns, cargo or unruly customers.
- Practice good communication with the locomotive engineer, keeping him/her informed of any important issues.
Train Conductor Requirements and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalency.
- Certification or additional training a plus.
- Experience working in the railroad industry.
- Keen attention to detail and ability to keep records and files organized.
- Competent collaborator and skilled communicator.
- Reliable and prompt; A strong time manager with respect for deadlines.
- Decisive and critical thinker.
