A surf brand is a company that designs, produces, and sells products related to surfing and the surf lifestyle. These products can include surfboards, wetsuits, clothing, accessories, and footwear tailored to surfers and ocean enthusiasts. Many surf brands also promote a specific surf culture, sponsoring athletes and events, and supporting environmental causes related to the ocean. Popular examples include Quiksilver, Billabong, and Rip Curl.

What are some typical challenges faced by team members working in a surf brand, and how can they be overcome?

Team members at a surf brand often face challenges such as balancing creative design with market trends, adapting to seasonal fluctuations in demand, and collaborating across diverse teams like marketing, product development, and retail. Clear communication and a passion for surf culture are essential to overcoming these challenges. Embracing feedback, staying updated on industry trends, and fostering a collaborative work environment help team members align on brand vision and deliver products that resonate with customers.

To thrive as a Surf Brand Manager, you need expertise in brand development, marketing strategy, and a deep understanding of surf culture, often supported by a degree in marketing or business. Familiarity with digital marketing platforms, social media analytics tools, and design software like Adobe Creative Suite is typically required. Creativity, strong communication, and relationship-building skills help you connect authentically with both the surfing community and stakeholders. These competencies are vital for building a brand identity that resonates, drives engagement, and maintains competitive advantage in a niche market.

Job description

Contract
Description
DSRT SURF isn't a traditional workplace, and we're not looking for traditional people.
We're building a fast growing hospitality and lifestyle brand where surf culture, guest experience, and high performance come together in a unique way. We're looking for people who thrive in energetic environments, take pride in their work, and want to help build something special from the ground up.
This is a fully on-site independent contractor opportunity for DJs, bands, and live performers based in Palm Desert, California, booked on a per-engagement basis. We're building an ongoing roster of entertainment talent and are looking to bring on multiple performers.
What You'll Do
As a DSRT SURF entertainment contractor, you bring the sound and energy to our pool, lounge, and event spaces. Whether you perform as a DJ, in a band, or as a solo or group live act, you'll set the tone for the guest experience across a range of settings, from laid back daytime sessions to high energy nightlife and private events.
  • Perform live sets or shows across daytime, evening, and special event settings
  • Read the room and adjust style, tempo, and energy in real time
  • Coordinate with the Entertainment & Events team on set times, show flow, and logistics
  • Provide and maintain your own instruments, equipment, or gear as applicable to your act
  • Support event activations, private buyouts, and themed nights with tailored performances
  • Ensure all material and performances align with brand standards and guest demographics
  • Arrive prepared for load-in, soundcheck, and load-out around scheduled set times

Requirements
What You Bring
  • Proven experience performing in nightlife, hospitality, or event settings as a DJ, band, or solo or group act
  • Strong stage presence and the ability to read and adapt to a crowd
  • Own equipment or instruments appropriate to your act
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional with strong communication skills
  • Flexibility to work varied dates including weekends, holidays, and evenings
  • Ability to operate as an independent contractor, including providing a completed W-9 and any required licenses or insurance

Who You Are
You bring energy, creativity, and a genuine love for performance and hospitality to every set. You're confident on stage or behind the booth, adaptable to different crowds and settings, and excited to be part of the entertainment lineup at DSRT SURF.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and perform for extended periods, including multi hour sets or shows
  • Ability to lift and transport instruments, equipment, or gear as applicable to your act
  • Ability to perform in outdoor and indoor environments, including sun, heat, and varying weather conditions
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and special events as needed

Compensation
This is an independent contractor engagement. Compensation is a flat rate per set, show, or event, commensurate with experience, and will be discussed prior to booking. A completed W-9 and signed independent contractor agreement are required prior to engagement.
Benefits
As an independent contractor, this engagement is not eligible for employee benefits, including health insurance, paid time off, or participation in company benefit programs.
Why DSRT SURF
This is an opportunity to help build something from the ground up where hospitality, lifestyle, and guest experience come together in a unique way. You'll play a role in shaping the sound, energy, and entertainment experience of DSRT SURF, with real room to grow your presence and bookings as the brand scales.
Equal Opportunity Employer
DSRT SURF is an Equal Opportunity Employer and is committed to creating an inclusive workplace. We consider applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, genetic information, or any other protected status under applicable law.
Reasonable Accommodation Statement
DSRT SURF provides reasonable accommodations in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws. Applicants requiring accommodation during the hiring process should notify the company.
At-Will Employment Statement
This job description is not intended to create a contract of employment. Engagement with DSRT SURF as an independent contractor may be ended by either party at any time, subject to the terms of the signed independent contractor agreement and applicable law.
Work Location
This is a fully on-site role in Palm Desert, California.
