How much do on call jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for on call in the United States is $17.91, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $19.23 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does it mean to be on call for a job?

Being 'on call' means that an employee is available to work outside of their regular hours if needed, often to handle emergencies or cover shifts. While on call, you may not be actively working, but you must be reachable and ready to respond quickly if contacted by your employer. This arrangement is common in fields like healthcare, IT support, maintenance, and emergency services. Compensation and expectations for on-call work can vary depending on the employer and industry. It's important to clarify the specific requirements and pay structure with your employer.

What are the typical expectations and responsibilities for an on-call position, and how does the work schedule usually operate?

In an 'On Call' position, employees are expected to be available to work or respond to work-related needs outside of regular business hours, often on short notice. The schedule can be unpredictable, requiring flexibility to cover shifts, handle emergencies, or provide support as needed. Common challenges include managing work-life balance and adapting to last-minute changes. On Call staff typically collaborate closely with supervisors and team members to ensure coverage and smooth handoffs. Clear communication and time management are essential for success in this role.

What are different types of on-call jobs?

When most people think of on-call jobs, medical professionals and first responders typically come to mind. For first responders, like firefighters and EMTs, on-call usually means you are sleeping at the station, ready to wake up and respond to a call quickly. Medical workers, on the other hand, may work a more traditional on-call schedule. While some nurses and doctors may sleep at the hospital, especially during their residency, you may also have an on-call shift where you can leave and go home, potentially never actually coming back. If you want a career as a nurse or doctor but do not like this unpredictability, rest assured that the chance of having on-call shifts decreases as you gain seniority and advanced qualifications. Repair workers like electricians may also work on-call. You may occasionally find on-call jobs in retail or customer service sectors, but this is not as common.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an on-call worker, and why are they important?

To thrive as an On-Call Worker, you need flexibility, reliability, and a quick learning ability, often supported by relevant experience or training in the specific industry (such as hospitality, healthcare, or customer service). Familiarity with scheduling software, communication tools, and industry-specific systems is typically required. Strong soft skills like adaptability, time management, and effective communication set exceptional on-call workers apart. These abilities ensure readiness to fill in at short notice, maintain productivity, and support organizational needs as situations change rapidly.

What is the difference between On Call vs Emergency Medical Technician?

AspectOn CallEmergency Medical Technician
Required credentialsVaries; often no formal certification requiredCPR certification; EMT license
Work environmentFlexible; can be at home or on-site, depending on employerAmbulances, hospitals, emergency scenes
Employer usageEmployers call employees as needed for urgent tasksEmergency response services, hospitals
Search and comparison intentOn Call vs EMT

On Call roles involve being available to respond to urgent needs without a fixed schedule, often with minimal certification. EMTs are trained emergency responders with specific certifications, working primarily in emergency medical settings. While both roles respond to urgent situations, EMTs have formal training and operate in more structured environments, whereas On Call positions offer flexibility with varying credential requirements.
