Oil Lab Technician

North American Substation Services (NASS) is a national leader in transformer services and highvoltage substation installation, maintenance, testing, and repair. With more than 20 years of experience, we deliver comprehensive, onestop solutions for utilities, industrial operations, and critical infrastructure across the United States. Our teams support the full lifecycle of substation and transformer assets, including installation, maintenance, major repairs, and diagnostic testing. 

Core services include transformer assembly, oil processing, regasket and lifeextension work, substation apparatus testing, and highvoltage equipment maintenance to ensure safe, reliable system performance. We work on a wide range of substation equipment—power transformers, breakers, switches, arresters, and control cabinets—and perform essential diagnostics such as TTR, winding resistance, insulation resistance, powerfactor testing, and oil analysis through our dedicated inhouse laboratory. With a nationwide fleet of mobile oilprocessing units, we provide rapid onsite support backed by strong technical expertise, a commitment to safety, and disciplined field execution to keep critical power systems operating reliably and efficiently.

Pay: 

The hourly rate for this position is between $18.00 – $25.00 per hour.
Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.

Job Purpose:

The Oil Lab Technician is responsible for the testing and documentation of transformer insulating fluids in production laboratory environments.Candidate must be detail-oriented, have experience working with chemicals, and be confident working with electronic test instruments in a lab environment.


  • Receive and document incoming fluid samples from customers.
  • Perform checks and calibrations on laboratory equipment.
  • Test fluid samples to determine their physical, electrical, and chemical properties.
  • Analyze test results to confirm their validity.
  • Perform routine maintenance on test equipment.
  • Wash glassware and sample containers as necessary.
  • Maintain laboratory as a clean and orderly work area
  • Coordinate the distribution of sampling materials to customers.
  • Participate in lab quality programs and improvements.

Required:

  • High School diploma or GED. 
  • Must be able to frequently kneel, bend, stand, crouch, and lift or carry up to 50 pounds to accomplish job tasks.

Preferred:

  • Associate’s degree in chemistry, biology, or related field of science.
  • Strong skills working with computers and digital testing equipment, including efficient data entry.
  • Ability to work safely, accurately, and efficiently both independently and as part of a small team.
  • Capable of prioritizing multiple goals to meet deadlines.
  • Professional experience working in a laboratory setting is a plus but not required.
