What is a cartographer?

Mapmakers, also known as cartographers, are professionals who design, create, and update maps for various purposes, such as navigation, education, urban planning, and environmental studies. They use data from surveys, satellite images, and geographic information systems (GIS) to represent physical and human-made features on maps. Cartographers must ensure their maps are accurate, readable, and tailored to the needs of their intended audience. Their work is essential for government agencies, businesses, and the general public who rely on up-to-date geographic information.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a cartographer?

To thrive as a Cartographer, you need strong skills in geography, spatial analysis, and cartographic design, typically supported by a degree in geography, GIS, or a related field. Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing software, and mapping tools like ArcGIS or QGIS is essential. Attention to detail, creativity, and strong communication skills help cartographers accurately represent data and collaborate with diverse teams. These skills ensure the creation of precise, user-friendly maps that support decision-making across various industries.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in digital map creation and maintenance roles?

Professionals in digital map creation and maintenance often encounter challenges such as ensuring data accuracy, keeping pace with constantly changing geographic and infrastructure information, and integrating data from multiple sources. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including software developers, GIS analysts, and field surveyors—is key to resolving discrepancies and implementing updates efficiently. Additionally, professionals must stay up to date with evolving mapping technologies and standards to deliver reliable, user-friendly map products.

What is the difference between Maps vs GIS Technician?

AspectMapsGIS Technician
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; basic cartography skillsBachelor's degree in GIS, Geography, or related field; GIS certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning, creating, and updating maps; often in offices or fieldworkManaging GIS data, analyzing spatial information, supporting GIS projects
Industry UsageUsed across various industries for visual representation of dataPrimarily in urban planning, environmental management, and infrastructure

Maps focus on creating visual representations of geographic data, often manually or with basic software. GIS Technicians work with Geographic Information Systems to analyze and manage spatial data, supporting complex projects. While both roles involve geographic data, GIS Technicians typically require more technical skills and certifications, and their work involves data analysis alongside map creation.

Job description

Snap Inc is a technology company. We believe the camera presents the greatest opportunity to improve the way people live and communicate. Snap contributes to human progress by empowering people to express themselves, live in the moment, learn about the world, and have fun together.

The Company operates Snapchat, a visual messaging app that enhances your relationships with friends, family, and the world, and Specs Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary dedicated to making computing more human, in addition to Bitmoji, Saturn, and other digital services.

Snap Engineering teams build fun and technically sophisticated products that reach hundreds of millions of Snapchatters around the world, every day. We're deeply committed to the well-being of everyone in our global community, which is why our values are at the root of everything we do. We move fast, with precision, and always execute with privacy at the forefront.

We're looking for an Engineering Manager to join the Maps team at Snap!

Our mission is to build the world's most personal map. While most digital maps were built for cars, Snap Map is built for people: a place to stay in touch with your friends, find things to do together, and explore the world. The breadth of Snapchat's audience makes it the most-used map outside of Google and Apple Maps, and this team owns the backend services and data infrastructure behind it, from friend location to places to the content that makes the map feel alive.

What you'll do:
  • Manage and mentor a team of backend engineers, in a fast-paced, quick-to-market environment

  • Set the strategy, build a roadmap, create measurable goals, and lead your team to deliver

  • Collaborate with Product, Operation, Data Science and Engineering teams, and executive stakeholders

  • Evaluate the technical tradeoffs of major decisions and be a strong technical mentor

  • Hire, grow and retain high-performing team members

  • Utilize AI tools and high velocity engineering workflows to design and ship scalable services while upholding rigorous standards for code correctness, security, and production ready quality code

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Background with building high availability and mission critical backend systems

  • Experience with leading an engineering team

  • A track record on both sides of the infrastructure and product split: you have built platform or infrastructure that other teams depend on, and you have shipped user-facing features and been accountable for their metrics

  • Experience building backend infrastructure and shipping user-facing product: you have built platform services other teams depend on, and you have owned features and the metrics they move

  • Ability leading and executing large, complex technical initiatives

  • Proficiency in, or a strong aptitude for, leveraging AI tools to streamline development, paired with the critical judgment to audit generated output for architectural integrity, performance bottlenecks, and security risks.

  • Adaptability in learning and applying evolving AI systems and tools to remain at the forefront of engineering trends and modern development practices

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant technical field such as computer science or equivalent years of practical work experience

  • 9+ years of post-Bachelor's software development experience; or a Master's degree in a technical field + 8+ years of post-grad software development experience; or a PhD in a related technical field + 5+ years of post-grad software development experience

  • 1+ years of experience managing a team or acting as a technical lead

  • Experience with distributed systems and backend service development

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with geospatial or location-based systems, such as map data pipelines, place and POI data, routing, or spatial indexing

  • Familiarity with driving large scale initiatives from ideation to completion

  • Track record of delivery in rapidly changing, highly collaborative, multi-stakeholder environments

  • Experience with Ops-heavy systems/products

If you have a disability or special need that requires accommodation, please don't be shy and provide us some information.

"Default Together" Policy at Snap: At Snap Inc. we believe that being together in person helps us build our culture faster, reinforce our values, and serve our community, customers and partners better through dynamic collaboration. To reflect this, we practice a "default together" approach and expect our team members to work in an office 4+ days per week.

At Snap, we believe that having a team of diverse backgrounds and voices working together will enable us to create innovative products that improve the way people live and communicate. Snap is proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and committed to providing employment opportunities regardless of race, religious creed, color, national origin, ancestry, physical disability, mental disability, medical condition, genetic information, marital status, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, childbirth and breastfeeding, age, sexual orientation, military or veteran status, or any other protected classification, in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local laws. EOE, including disability/vets.

We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and will consider qualified applicants with criminal histories in a manner consistent with applicable law (by example, the requirements of the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance and the Los Angeles Fair Chance Initiative for Hiring, where applicable).

Our Benefits: Snap Inc. is its own community, so we've got your back! We do our best to make sure you and your loved ones have everything you need to be happy and healthy, on your own terms. Our benefits are built around your needs and include paid parental leave, comprehensive medical coverage, emotional and mental health support programs, and compensation packages that let you share in Snap's long-term success!
