How much do celestial mechanics jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 26, 2026, the average hourly pay for celestial mechanics in the United States is $24.81, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $28.85 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How to become an orbital analyst?

To become an orbital analyst, typically a bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, physics, or a related field is required. Gaining experience with orbital mechanics, satellite tracking, and data analysis tools such as MATLAB or STK is important, and advanced roles may require a master's degree or security clearance. Developing strong analytical skills and understanding space environment factors are also beneficial.

What are careers in space exploration?

Careers in space exploration include roles such as aerospace engineers, astrophysicists, mission planners, and satellite technicians. These jobs often require strong backgrounds in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM), and may involve working with spacecraft, telescopes, or mission operations in laboratories or space agencies. Certifications in relevant technical skills and experience with specialized tools are also valuable.

What is the difference between Celestial Mechanics vs Astrodynamics?

AspectCelestial MechanicsAstrodynamics
Required CredentialsPhysics or astronomy degrees, advanced mathematicsEngineering or aerospace degrees, applied mathematics
Work EnvironmentResearch institutions, universities, observatoriesSpace agencies, satellite companies, aerospace firms
Industry UsageStudying celestial bodies, orbital mechanics in spaceDesigning satellite trajectories, mission planning

Celestial Mechanics focuses on understanding the motion of celestial bodies under gravitational forces, often in a theoretical or research setting. Astrodynamics applies similar principles but emphasizes practical applications like satellite orbit design and space mission planning. While both fields require strong backgrounds in physics and mathematics, Celestial Mechanics is more research-oriented, whereas Astrodynamics is more engineering and application-focused.

What is a celestial mechanic?

A celestial mechanic is a scientist or engineer who studies the motion of celestial bodies such as planets, moons, and satellites using principles of physics and mathematics. The role often involves analyzing orbital dynamics, developing models, and using tools like computer simulations to predict movements and interactions in space environments.

What jobs can you do related to astronomy?

Jobs related to astronomy include astronomer, astrophysicist, planetary scientist, and observational astronomer. These roles often require strong backgrounds in physics and mathematics, proficiency with telescopes and data analysis software, and advanced degrees such as a master's or Ph.D. in a related field. Employment can be found at research institutions, observatories, universities, and government agencies like NASA or space agencies.
