What is lunar design?

Lunar Design is a design consultancy that specializes in product design, industrial design, and user experience. Founded in 1984, the company has worked with clients across a range of industries to create innovative products and solutions. Lunar Design is known for its collaborative approach, blending creativity with technology to deliver functional and aesthetically pleasing designs. The firm has received numerous awards for its work and has been influential in shaping the industrial design landscape.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lunar designer?

To thrive as a Lunar Designer, you need expertise in aerospace engineering, planetary science, and architectural design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and experience in space habitat concepts. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools, and knowledge of space agency standards (like NASA or ESA) are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, creativity, and effective teamwork are vital soft skills for this role. These skills are important to ensure safe, functional, and innovative designs that can withstand the rigors of the lunar environment and support human activities.

How does a lunar design role typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during space mission projects?

In a Lunar Design role, collaboration with cross-functional teamsβ€”such as engineers, scientists, and project managersβ€”is essential to ensure that concepts for lunar habitats, vehicles, or instruments are both innovative and feasible. Designers often participate in multidisciplinary meetings to integrate technical requirements, safety standards, and human factors into their proposals. They translate mission goals and technical constraints into visual models and prototypes, iterating on feedback from various stakeholders. This collaborative environment fosters creativity while ensuring that all mission-critical needs are met effectively.

What is the difference between Lunar Design vs UX Designer?

AspectLunar DesignUX Designer
Required CredentialsPortfolio, design tools proficiency, sometimes a degree in design or related fieldPortfolio, user research skills, design tools proficiency, often a degree in design, psychology, or related field
Work EnvironmentDesign agencies, tech companies, startups, collaborative teamsTech companies, agencies, product teams, user research settings
Industry UsageDesign-focused roles, product development, brandingUser experience, product design, human-centered design

Both Lunar Design and UX Designer roles require strong portfolios and proficiency in design tools. While Lunar Design often emphasizes branding and visual design within collaborative environments, UX Designers focus more on user research and creating seamless user experiences. The roles overlap in skills but differ in focus areas within the design industry.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Lunar Permanence business unit, which develops Blue Origin’s Blue Moon landers and related products. To further Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

As part of a hardworking team of engineers and technical designers, you will directly impact the history of space exploration and require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight. Join us in lowering the cost of access to space and enabling Blue Origin's vision of millions of people living and working in space to benefit Earth.

This opportunity reports to the RF Systems group inside of the Lunar Permanence business unit. This Mechanical Engineering position covers the mechanical design, thermal and structural analysis, and test of flight hardware structures and associated electronics packaging. You will collaborate with antenna designers and RF engineers to develop mechanical solutions for parabolic reflectors, horn antennas, and a variety of RF systems used for lunar surface and cislunar missions. You will work as a member of the Human Landing System (HLS) Sustaining Lunar Development (SLD) program team and will play a key role in developing the Lunar Transportation systems that will return humans to the Moon and extend human presence permanently beyond the bounds of Earth. Passion for our mission and vision is required. If you're excited by providing both near term and long-term value, solving novel problems, learning about interesting topics, and completing challenging projects, please apply!
