What are some common challenges faced by contract lunar designers when working with multidisciplinary teams on space missions?

Contract lunar designers often collaborate with engineers, scientists, and mission planners, which can present challenges in aligning design concepts with technical requirements and mission objectives. Communication is key, as design choices must meet strict safety, material, and regulatory standards unique to lunar environments. Balancing creative innovation with the pragmatic constraints of space missions can be demanding, but it also offers opportunities to develop unique solutions and contribute to groundbreaking projects. Staying adaptable and open to feedback is essential for success in this dynamic and collaborative role.

What is a Contract Lunar Designer?

A Contract Lunar Designer is a professional who creates and develops designs for projects related to lunar exploration or habitation, typically on a contract or freelance basis. Their work may involve designing habitats, vehicles, equipment, or mission layouts intended for use on the Moon. They collaborate with engineers, scientists, and space agencies to ensure that their designs are feasible, safe, and meet specific mission requirements. Contract Lunar Designers need a strong background in engineering, architecture, or industrial design, along with specialized knowledge of space environments. This role is critical in advancing lunar missions and ensuring the success of future human and robotic activities on the Moon.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Lunar Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Lunar Designer, you need expertise in aerospace engineering, planetary science, and architectural design, often supported by a relevant engineering or architecture degree. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D modeling tools, and simulation platforms, as well as knowledge of lunar environment standards, is typically required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and project management skills help distinguish top candidates in this role. These abilities are crucial for developing safe, innovative, and feasible solutions for lunar habitats and infrastructure in challenging extraterrestrial environments.

What is the difference between Contract Lunar Design vs Contract Spacecraft Design?

AspectContract Lunar DesignContract Spacecraft Design

Job description

Data Infrastructure Engineer (6 month contract)
Lunar Energy is looking for a Data Infrastructure Engineer to design, deploy, and maintain the hybrid infrastructure stack underpinning our enterprise data platform. In this role, you will own the full lifecycle of a multi-tier environment spanning columnar analytics databases, relational SQL systems, Windows and Linux application servers, and shared storage - ensuring reliability, performance, and scalability across production and development environments. You will bring strong hands-on expertise in database administration, scripting, and ETL pipeline development, paired with an operational mindset and a proactive approach to capacity planning and infrastructure-as-code.
Lunar Energy was founded to transition homes to 100% clean energy-making our electricity greener, our air cleaner and our energy more safe, secure and reliable for all. We're a fast-growing, global company building the world's best clean energy products to electrify all homes and connect communities to form clean, resilient virtual power plants.
On a given day at Lunar, you'll likely...
  • Design, deploy, and maintain Vertica analytics database clusters (physical and virtual), including cluster topology, K-safety, node health, projection design, and query performance tuning.
  • Administer SQL Server 2016/2019 Enterprise on virtualized Windows infrastructure, including configuring and maintaining Always On Availability Groups for high availability.
  • Write and maintain PowerShell and Python scripts to automate Windows server deployments, patching, monitoring, alerting, and operational tooling across the infrastructure stack.
  • Build, maintain, and optimize ETL pipelines that move and transform data across Vertica, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and flat-file sources, with robust error handling and data quality checks.
  • Administer and tune PostgreSQL instances on Linux, managing roles, schemas, access controls, backup and recovery, and integrating PostgreSQL within the broader data pipeline.
  • Manage the hypervisor platform (VMware vSphere/ESXi or equivalent), including VM provisioning, resource tuning, vSwitch configuration, host patching, and live migrations with minimal downtime.
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code, runbooks, and monitoring dashboards; lead incident response for infrastructure outages and conduct post-mortems.

Desired Skills:
  • 5+ years of experience in database or systems infrastructure engineering, with hands-on expertise in Nutanix, SQL Server, and PostgreSQL administration.
  • Proficiency in PowerShell scripting for Windows automation and Python scripting for infrastructure automation, data processing, and ETL pipeline development.
  • Experience designing and maintaining ETL pipelines across heterogeneous database and file-based sources, including error handling, retry logic, and scheduling.
  • Strong working knowledge of Linux system administration (RHEL/AlmaLinux/Rocky Linux 9.x or Ubuntu 22.04/24.04 LTS) and Windows Server 2019 system administration, including storage layout, networking, OS hardening, and lifecycle management.
  • Hypervisor administration experience with VMware vSphere/ESXi or equivalent - VM provisioning, resource management, live migration, and host maintenance.
  • Solid understanding of storage concepts including local disk layouts, NAS/SAN, and IOPS planning.
  • Collaborative and communicative approach - comfortable working across data science, analytics, and engineering teams with clear written and verbal communication.
