What is an internship?

An internship is a temporary position offered by companies to students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in a specific field. Internships can be paid or unpaid and may last from a few weeks to several months. They provide hands-on learning, networking opportunities, and a chance to develop industry-specific skills. Many employers use internships to identify potential full-time hires.

What kind of projects or tasks are commonly assigned to interns?

Interns are often given a mix of responsibilities, such as assisting with ongoing projects, conducting research, preparing reports, and helping with administrative tasks. Depending on the organization and department, you may be asked to support client meetings, participate in brainstorming sessions, or contribute to specific team objectives. Internships are designed to provide hands-on learning experiences, so you will likely have the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals, receive feedback, and develop practical skills. This structure helps you gain a comprehensive understanding of the organization's operations and prepares you for future career advancement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an internship, and why are they important?

To thrive in an internship, candidates should demonstrate a strong willingness to learn, foundational knowledge relevant to the industry, and adaptability. Interns often use productivity tools like Microsoft Office, communication platforms such as Slack or Teams, and may need basic skills with industry-specific software depending on the field. Excellent communication, time management, and teamwork are valuable soft skills that help interns stand out. These abilities allow interns to make meaningful contributions, develop professionally, and succeed in dynamic professional environments.

What jobs do internships do?

Internships are temporary positions that provide practical work experience in a specific field or industry. Interns typically perform tasks related to their area of study or career interests, such as assisting with projects, conducting research, or supporting daily operations, often under supervision. These roles help develop skills, build professional networks, and may lead to full-time employment opportunities.

Summer 2027 Internship Opportunities

Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation | Medora, North Dakota

Join the Greatest Team in the West - and Leave Your Legacy

Opportunity awaits in Medora.

The Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation (TRMF) is seeking motivated college students for paid Summer 2027 internships in Accounting, Human Resources, Marketing, Hospitality, Group Event Services, Retail, Entertainment, and Information Technology.

But a TRMF internship is more than a summer job.  Students selected for an internship will become part of the 2027 Trailblazer cohort of the Legacy Trail Internship Program: a structured 12-week experience combining meaningful department-based work, professional development, mentorship, leadership learning, and a Legacy Project designed to create lasting value.

Set in the heart of the North Dakota Badlands, TRMF welcomes guests from around the world through lodging, attractions, entertainment, education, retail, and unforgettable guest experiences. Our interns have the opportunity to contribute to that mission while building skills, relationships, and experiences they can carry into their future careers.

Internship Opportunities

Summer 2027 opportunities may be available in:

Accounting

Gain experience supporting accounting operations, reconciliations, accounts payable, reporting, and finance-related projects.

Human Resources
Support onboarding, employee communication, HR administration, training and development, compliance processes, recruitment, and seasonal workforce initiatives.

Marketing
Contribute to marketing campaigns, content creation, digital media, guest engagement, promotional initiatives, and special projects.

Hospitality - Hotel Front Desk
Build hospitality and lodging experience through reservations, guest communication, check-in/check-out, problem-solving, and front desk operations.

Group Event Services

Support group reservations, event coordination, guest communication, logistics, and the delivery of memorable group experiences.

Information Technology
Gain hands-on experience supporting technology systems, equipment setup, troubleshooting, help desk needs, and technology projects supporting TRMF operations.

Retail
Develop experience in retail operations, merchandising, inventory, point-of-sale systems, guest service, sales, and department projects.

Entertainment
Experience the behind-the-scenes side of live entertainment through event preparation, performer and guest coordination, show logistics, operations, and production support.

Internship responsibilities will vary based on department needs, student interests, academic requirements, and organizational priorities.

The Legacy Trail Internship Program

Every selected intern becomes a Trailblazer and participates in TRMF's Legacy Trail Internship Program alongside their department internship.

The 12-week program is designed to help students move beyond simply gaining work experience and begin developing the confidence, perspective, leadership skills, and professional relationships needed for their next step.

Throughout the summer, Trailblazers will:

  • Participate in In the Arena leadership and professional development sessions.
  • Explore principles of exceptional hospitality and service through Unreasonable Hospitality by Will Guidara.
  • Connect with TRMF leaders and professionals across the organization.
  • Participate in a structured mentorship experience.
  • Build relationships with fellow Trailblazers from different areas of the organization.
  • Apply classroom learning to real-world opportunities and operational challenges.
  • Reflect on their growth, leadership, and professional development throughout the summer.
  • Complete a Legacy Project that contributes to department goals and creates lasting value for TRMF.
  • Share their work and experience as part of the end-of-season Legacy Trail Internship Showcase.
  • Become part of the Legacy Trail alumni network, staying connected with fellow Trailblazers and TRMF beyond the internship      experience.

The goal is simple: do meaningful work, grow as a professional, and leave a legacy.

Who Should Apply?

We are looking for current college students and recent graduates pursuing education or career interests related to:

Accounting, Human Resources, Marketing, Hospitality, Event Services, Retail, Entertainment, Information Technology, Business, Communications, Tourism, or related fields.

Strong Trailblazer candidates are:

  • Curious and eager to learn.
  • Dependable and willing to take ownership.
  • Service-minded.
  • Open to feedback and professional growth.
  • Comfortable working as part of a team.
  • Interested in contributing - not simply observing.
  • Ready to make the most of a unique summer experience.

Summer 2027 Internship Details

  • Paid internship opportunities
  • Approximately 12 weeks
  • Program begins June 1st, 2027
  • Interviews and selection will begin in mid-January 2027
  • Seasonal housing may be available, subject to availability and applicable housing terms.
  • Interns must be able to work in Medora, North Dakota.
  • Department schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events depending on the internship assignment.

Why Spend Your Summer in Medora?

As a TRMF intern, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Gain hands-on experience directly connected to your field of study or career interests.
  • Build professional skills through structured leadership development and mentorship.
  • Work alongside experienced professionals in a real-world tourism and hospitality organization.
  • Develop relationships with leaders, mentors, and fellow interns.
  • Complete work you can speak about in future interviews and carry into your resume and portfolio.
  • Contribute to a mission-driven organization focused on creating positive, life-changing experiences.
  • Live and work in the North Dakota Badlands, with Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the Medora experience right outside      your door.

You won't just spend a summer in Medora.

You'll become a Trailblazer, build your experience, and leave your legacy.

Ready to Begin Your Legacy Trail?
