Job description

ZTEX Construction is a heavy civil contractor specializing in earthwork, concrete, asphalt paving, underground utilities and overall project management. We are an El Paso born and raised company, and we are currently looking for Heavy Equipment Mechanics with mid-level experience. The role is ideal for a motivated professional who takes pride in quality, workmanship, diagnosing and solving complex mechanical issues. 


A Heavy Equipment Mechanic diagnoses, repairs, and maintains diesel and gas-powered machinery—such as excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, and cranes—to ensure operational safety and efficiency. 


Responsibilities

This list of Essential Duties and Responsibilities is not exhaustive and may be supplemented.

  • Analyze malfunctions and repair, rebuild and maintain power equipment, such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, paving machines, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, dredges, pumps, compressors and pneumatic tools.
  • Operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges, replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and test overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency.
  • Weld broken parts and structural members may direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly and disassembly of equipment, and may repair, adjust and maintain mining machinery, such as stripping and loading shovels, drilling and cutting machines, and continuous mining machines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A good working knowledge of heavy equipment maintenance programs, policies, nomenclature, work methods, manuals, or other established guidelines.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of internal combustion engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical diagnostics.
  • Analytical ability to define or recognize the dimension of the problems involved, to collect the necessary data to establish the facts, and take or recommend action based upon application or interpretation of established guidelines.
  • Skilled in using hand tools, power tools, and computerized, specialized, and precision measuring instruments.


Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years' experience.
  • High school graduation or other equivalent (i.e., General Educational Development (GED), foreign equivalency, etc.)
  • ASE Certification preferred.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions


Physical Requirements:

Medium/heavy - exert force of 50-100 lbs., occasionally; 25-50 lbs., frequently; or 10-20 lbs., constantly. Frequent talking, hearing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, balancing, crouching, reaching, handling, repetitive fine motor activities, and feeling. Hearing and speech to communicate in person, via video conference and computers, or over the telephone. Mobility to work in a typical mechanic shop and use of mechanical equipment. Stamina to remain standing/stooping and maintain concentration for an extended period. Vision: Frequent near acuity, depth perception, and color vision.

Environmental Conditions:

 Varies from a climate-controlled office setting to work in an open garage with temperatures ranging from mild/moderate to extreme cold/heat. Exposure to noise levels ranging from moderate to loud for occasional to frequent time periods.

Additional Qualifying Factors

As a condition of employment, you will be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening and physical screening.
