What is Zoo Engineering?

Zoo engineering is a specialized field that combines principles of engineering with animal science to design, build, and maintain zoological facilities. Professionals in this area work to create safe, enriching, and sustainable habitats for animals, while also ensuring the safety and engagement of visitors. This work involves collaborating with architects, animal care staff, and biologists to meet strict regulatory standards for animal welfare and public safety. Zoo engineers may be involved in projects like designing animal enclosures, water filtration systems, and visitor pathways. Their work is crucial in supporting conservation, education, and research activities within zoos.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Zoo Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Zoo Engineer, you need expertise in civil or mechanical engineering, facility design, and an understanding of animal habitats, typically supported by an engineering degree and relevant licensure. Familiarity with CAD software, project management tools, and building codes related to animal enclosures is essential. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you collaborate with animal care staff and address unique design challenges. These abilities ensure that zoo environments are safe, functional, and conducive to animal well-being and visitor engagement.

Job description

About The Role

As a Senior Designer at Zoo, you will own design across our product experiences, core workflows, as well as our website, tutorials, and brand systems assets. This is a broad, high-impact role for a versatile designer who thrives moving between product design, web design, visual storytelling, and user education.

You will help shape how customers experience Zoo at every stage: discovering the company, learning the platform, using complex technical tools, and engaging with the brand over time. Our products include Zoo Design Studio- our 3D CAD modeling app, Zookeeper- our AI agent, and infrastructure tools, so we need a designer who can bring clarity, usability, and visual excellence to highly sophisticated technology. You will partner closely with engineering and leadership to establish a world-class design standard across every touchpoint.

What You'll Do
  • Own our next phase of design across Zoo's full ecosystem, including product, website, tutorials, documentation, brand, and marketing surfaces
  • Design intuitive product experiences and workflows for complex technical tools
  • Support website design and optimization, improving storytelling, conversion, visual polish, and brand consistency
  • Create tutorials, onboarding flows, product education assets, and visual learning content that help users adopt the platform quickly
  • Build, maintain, and evolve a scalable design system in Figma across product and web experiences
  • Design wireframes, prototypes, polished UI, graphics, presentations, and launch assets as needed
  • Partner closely with engineering to ensure designs are implemented with high quality and strong user experience standards
  • Collaborate with leadership on brand direction, creative strategy, and company-wide visual identity
  • Gather user feedback, run usability testing, and continuously improve experiences across customer touchpoints
  • Document systems, workflows, and design processes to create leverage as the company scales
  • Raise the quality bar across the company through strong taste, thoughtful execution, and user-centered thinking

What You'll Need

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Marketing, Design, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • 5+ years of experience in a broad design role spanning product design, web design, brand, or growth design for a technical product
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating versatility across software products, websites, and visual design systems
  • Exceptional UI/UX instincts with the ability to simplify complex workflows into intuitive experiences
  • Professional expertise with Figma creating and maintaining design systems
  • Experience using AI tools to automate design workflows
  • Experience collaborating closely with engineering teams and shipping high-quality digital products
  • Strong visual design skills including typography, layout, hierarchy, and brand consistency
  • Ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving startup environment with ambiguity and shifting priorities
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple parallel design workstreams
Nice to Have
  • Experience designing technical products such as developer tools, CAD software, 3D tools, or B2B SaaS platforms
  • Experience creating tutorials, onboarding systems, or educational product content
  • Familiarity with front-end technologies such as React or TypeScript
  • Experience with motion design, illustration, or video content
  • Interest in hardware, engineering, manufacturing, or computational design
  • Experience working with open-source communities or technical users
