Job description

Senior DevOps Engineer
Why This is an Exciting Role:
We are seeking a skilled DevOps Engineer to support development efforts as well as deployment of a critical government information system. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with GitLab CI/CD pipelines, Nexus Repository management, and building and maintaining Apache Solr clusters with Zookeeper in production environments.
You will be responsible for automating build, test, and deployment processes, managing artifact repositories, and orchestrating infrastructure upgrades in Windows Server environments and in AWS cloud infrastructure. Strong expertise in Windows Server administration, AWS cloud services (EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, CloudFormation/Terraform), and infrastructure-as-code practices are essential. Experience with containerization and container orchestration strategies for Java applications, configuration management tools, and implementing security controls in both on-premises VMware and cloud environments is highly valued.
Position Responsibilities:
Core Technical Skills
  • Hands-on experience with GitLab CI/CD pipeline design, implementation, and maintenance
  • Proficiency in Nexus Repository management for artifact storage and dependency management
  • Production experience building and maintaining Apache Solr clusters with Zookeeper
  • Strong Windows Server administration and infrastructure upgrade orchestration
  • AWS cloud services expertise: EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, RDS
  • Infrastructure-as-code proficiency: CloudFormation and/or Terraform
  • Containerization experience with Java applications
  • Configuration management tools experience
  • VMware on-premises environment administration
  • Security controls implementation in hybrid environments (VM and cloud)

CI/CD & Automation Responsibilities
  • Design, implement, and maintain GitLab CI/CD pipelines for automated deployments
  • Automate deployment processes across development, staging, and production environments
  • Manage Nexus Repository for artifact storage and dependency management
  • Develop and maintain procedures and infrastructure automation solutions
  • Troubleshoot and resolve CI/CD pipeline issues
  • Build and maintain container images as needed

Infrastructure & Database Support
  • Build and maintain Apache Solr clusters with Zookeeper in production
  • Administer and upgrade Windows Server environments
  • Plan and execute VMware to AWS migration strategies
  • Configure and manage AWS services (EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, RDS)
  • Collaborate with DBAs on RDS setup and configuration on AWS
  • Support standalone Oracle database environments
  • Monitor system performance and implement optimizations

Developer/QA Support & Collaboration
  • Work closely with development team on CI/CD pipeline support
  • Troubleshoot developer workstation setup issues
  • Resolve build and deployment issues
  • Debug interface and integration problems
  • Provide technical guidance on containerization strategies
  • Support development team for end-to-end buildout of entire application components.
  • Support development environment configuration and tooling

Security & Compliance
  • Implement security controls in VMware and AWS environments
  • Apply security best practices for government information systems
  • Ensure compliance with security policies and standards
  • Manage IAM policies and access controls

Migration & Modernization
  • Execute infrastructure modernization initiatives
  • Document data migration strategies and procedures during deployment/upgrades
  • Minimize downtime during transitions and upgrades

Experience and Qualifications:
To be eligible for this demanding position, the ideal candidate should demonstrate the following experience and qualifications:
Required Education and Years of Experience:
  • 18 Years of experience in Software or Systems Engineering roles or a highly related field of work with similar scope and responsibilities.
  • A Bachelor's degree may be substituted for 4 years of experience and a Master's Degree may be substituted for 6 years of experience.

Required Qualifications:
  • Hands-on experience setting up build infrastructure with GitLab for development
  • Experience with Nexus repository or similar package repository for Java applications
  • Strong expertise in Windows Server administration to include working on Windows Server or VM to setup and maintain authentication via LDAP or Active Directory.
  • Strong expertise in setting up and/or managing services in AWS (EC2, VPC, IAM, S3, CloudFormation/Terraform)
  • Infrastructure-as-code practices
  • Experience in installation, setup, and configuration of full-stack applications
