Do you love the game of basketball and enjoy working with youth? The YMCA of the North Shore is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic Basketball Specialist to join our team at the Plaistow YMCA!

As a Basketball Specialist, you'll help create a fun, inclusive, and positive environment where participants of all ages can develop their basketball skills, build confidence, and foster a love for the game. From instructional classes and leagues to camps and special events, you'll play an important role in delivering high-quality programs that strengthen our community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

What You'll DoProgram Leadership & Player Development
  • Lead engaging basketball classes, clinics, leagues, camps, vacation programs, and special events.
  • Deliver YMCA-approved curriculum that promotes skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and player progression.
  • Create a fun, positive, and inclusive environment where participants of all skill levels can succeed.
  • Stay current with coaching techniques and basketball trends to enhance program quality and participant engagement.
Member & Community Engagement
  • Build strong relationships with participants, families, and YMCA members through positive daily interactions.
  • Communicate program goals, schedules, and participant progress with professionalism and enthusiasm.
  • Help promote YMCA basketball programs within the community and foster relationships with local schools and organizations.
Program Support & Operations
  • Assist with scheduling classes, court rentals, leagues, and special events to maximize participation.
  • Support staffing needs by assisting with coverage when needed.
  • Help ensure programs run smoothly and provide an exceptional participant experience.
Safety & Facility Standards
  • Maintain a safe, welcoming, and well-organized gymnasium environment.
  • Enforce YMCA safety policies and program guidelines.
  • Inspect equipment before and after programs and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
  • Ensure courts, equipment, and program spaces remain clean and ready for use.
Teamwork & Staff Support
  • Assist with onboarding and training new sports staff as directed.
  • Collaborate with fellow coaches and YMCA staff to create a positive, supportive team culture.

We're looking for an enthusiastic team member who is passionate about basketball, youth development, and creating positive experiences for participants of all ages.
  • Associate degree or coursework in Recreation, Education, Health Sciences, Youth Development, or a related field preferred. An equivalent combination of education and relevant coaching or program experience will be considered.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience coaching basketball, leading youth sports programs, or delivering recreation-based programming.
  • Previous experience working with children and teens in a sports, recreation, camp, or educational setting preferred.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills with the ability to engage participants and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a positive, organized, and participant-focused environment.
  • Passion for teaching basketball fundamentals while promoting teamwork, sportsmanship, and confidence.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain required YMCA certifications.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification, or the ability to obtain certification within 30 days of hire.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move sports equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to actively lead basketball practices, clinics, leagues, and other sports activities, including running, demonstrating drills, bending, reaching, and standing for extended periods.
  • Visual and auditory ability to effectively supervise participants, maintain awareness of surroundings, and respond promptly to emergencies.
  • Ability to react calmly, appropriately, and effectively in unexpected situations while ensuring participant safety.
  • Ability to work in an active, fast-paced environment while maintaining a positive and professional demeanor.
