What is a year plumbing apprentice?

A Year Plumbing Apprentice is an entry-level worker who is enrolled in a plumbing apprenticeship program, typically in their first year of training. They work under the supervision of licensed plumbers to learn the basics of plumbing systems, installation, maintenance, and safety protocols. Apprentices gain hands-on experience on job sites while also attending classroom instruction to understand plumbing codes and theory. Completing an apprenticeship is a required step toward becoming a licensed plumber.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a year plumbing apprentice?

To thrive as a Year Plumbing Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of plumbing systems, manual dexterity, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with common plumbing tools, safety protocols, and, in some regions, enrollment in a certified apprenticeship program are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help apprentices learn quickly and work well with supervisors and clients. These skills are crucial for mastering trade fundamentals, ensuring safety, and delivering quality workmanship as you progress in your plumbing career.

What are some common challenges faced by first-year plumbing apprentices, and how can they overcome them?

First-year plumbing apprentices often encounter challenges such as adapting to physically demanding work, understanding technical terminology, and learning to use specialized tools. It can also be difficult to balance on-the-job training with classroom instruction. To overcome these obstacles, apprentices should actively seek guidance from experienced journeymen, consistently review training materials, and prioritize safety on the job site. Job description

Washington Service Plumber PL01 or PL02

About Mr. Rooter Plumbing

Mr. Rooter Plumbing welcomes ambitious team members who appreciate the importance of the plumbing profession.

Couffley Home Services is a 100% family-owned operator of Mr. Rooter Plumbing franchises across Oregon and Washington. We focus exclusively on service plumbing, drain cleaning, and sewer services. We are building one of the Pacific Northwest's premier plumbing organizations without private equity investors and without the complication of other trades. We are proud to be plumbers.

  • Do you love service plumbing because you go home each night knowing that your work restored another person's quality of life?

  • Is it a point of pride to serve your customers through the whole process, from the initial diagnosis through the finished work, instead of taking leads from a salesman or handing off work to an install crew?

  • Are you a courteous professional who consistently earns customer praise that will add to our team's collection of 7,000+ five-star Google reviews?

The Opportunity

If you hold a Washington PL01 or PL02 plumbing license, love the service side of the trade, and believe in your ability to work within a performance pay model, this could be a strong opportunity.

A Washington PL01 who matches the averages of our existing team for job size and conversion rate can comfortably expect to earn $120,000 per year, with above-average performance realistically earning $160,000+ and top-tier performance exceeding $200,000.

What You'll Do

  • Follow the Mr. Rooter customer service system. Earn trust, diagnose residential plumbing problems, and present multiple options with upfront, flat-rate pricing for customer approval before starting work. Personally complete every step of the process. Mr. Rooter Plumbing resolves approximately 90% of calls in a single visit.

  • Demonstrate technical excellence in service plumbing. Mr. Rooter does not perform new construction or heavy commercial work. Our focus is residential service with similar work for light commercial sites. Expect lots of fixtures, water heaters, leak repairs, water services, and re-pipes.

  • Train the next generation of the plumbing trade. Not all PL01s are assigned a full-time apprentice; however, each one makes themselves available as a remote technical reference and hosts occasional ride-alongs for trainees collecting hours toward their own PL04, PL02, or PL01 license.

  • Maintain a well-stocked truck and work efficiently to complete jobs without unnecessary trips to the supply house or return visits.

  • Clearly explain plumbing issues and repair options to homeowners.

  • Maintain a clean, professional jobsite and provide an excellent customer experience.

This is a service plumbing position. Mr. Rooter does not perform new construction or heavy commercial plumbing.

What We're Looking For

  • Washington PL01 or PL02 plumbing license required.

  • Strong residential service plumbing experience.

  • Excellent diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.

  • Comfortable presenting multiple repair options using upfront, flat-rate pricing.

  • Professional, courteous communication and customer service skills.

  • Ability to work efficiently and independently.

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.

  • Desire and patience to teach and mentor the next generation of plumbers.

  • Pride in workmanship and a commitment to doing the job right.

Why Join Mr. Rooter Plumbing?

Consistent Work

Mr. Rooter Plumbing has served Portland and Seattle for 30 years. Our local team is in the top 5% of plumbing companies in the nation by size, and demand currently exceeds our team's capacity.

Jobs Close to Home

A Company Focused on Plumbing

As a licensed plumber, you'll work with managers and office team members who understand the trade and prioritize plumbing excellence.

Supportive Leadership

You'll join a team supported by a Branch Manager with 9+ years at Mr. Rooter and a Director of Operations with 23 years with the company. Both are accessible by phone or video from the jobsite when you need support.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Performance pay based on the value of completed jobs with no pay limit

  • A Washington PL01 who matches the averages of our existing team for job size and conversion rate can comfortably expect $120,000/year

  • Above-average performance can realistically earn $160,000+

  • Top-tier performance can exceed $200,000
