Job description

Yamaha has an excellent opportunity for a Testing Technician IIto join our Marine team in Bridgeport AL. In this role, you will support the Marine Test & Validation Center by preparing, instrumenting, operating, and evaluating marine engines, boats, propulsion systems, controls, and related test articles in on-water and facility-based environments. This role combines hands-on marine technical expertise, safe boat operation, accurate data collection, clear reporting, and strong attention to detail to help validate product performance, reliability, and quality. The position offers the opportunity to work directly with advanced Yamaha marine products, specialized test equipment, and cross-functional engineering, service, sales, and marketing teams.
What you'll be doing:
  • Perform supervised on-water testing and evaluation of marine engines, propellers, controls, rigging, and integrated control systems while safely operating test boats. Collect, organize, review, and summarize test data; prepare clear written test reports and support timely completion of assigned test schedules.
  • Prepare boats, engines, and related test articles for testing by installing rigging, instrumentation, and data acquisition equipment such as thermocouples, pressure transducers, strain gauges, sensors, wiring, and related measurement systems.
  • Assist with routine repair, maintenance, inspection, and readiness of company boats, engines, trailers, vehicles, test equipment, buildings, docks, grounds, and related assets. Monitor commonly used supplies and communicate replenishment needs to support uninterrupted testing operations.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and professional work environment across buildings, shops, storage areas, grounds, docks, boats, and test locations.
  • Protect the confidentiality of test plans, products, results, data, photos, conversations, and development activities in accordance with company expectations.
  • Support sales, marketing, service, engineering, and customer-facing activities as needed by preparing test properties, assisting with event setup and cleanup, and demonstrating product operation in a safe and professional manner.
  • Assist with test cell, shop-based, field, and off-site testing activities when needed, including preparation, setup, data collection, troubleshooting support, and post-test teardown.
  • Support outbound shipments by preparing, protecting, packing, and documenting engines, parts, tools, and test equipment for transport; provide accurate details to appropriate staff for shipment processing.
  • Receive, unload, inspect, stage, and communicate receipt of incoming freight, parts, engines, tools, and equipment; provide bills of lading and receiving details to appropriate staff.

What you need to be successful:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training, some college coursework, or equivalent hands-on marine, mechanical, electrical, or diagnostic experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate boats in open-water test environments; experience with performance testing, towing, trailering, launching, and docking preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with marine engines, engine rigging, electronics, diagnostics, repair, maintenance, or closely related technical work.
  • Technical marine certification, manufacturer training, ABYC/NMEA familiarity, or equivalent industry training preferred.
  • Valid driver's license required; CDL or ability to obtain CDL is beneficial.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Adobe tools, and basic computer-based diagnostic or data acquisition systems.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to safely operate or learn to operate forklifts, trucks, trailers, hoists, cranes, and related shop or marine equipment in accordance with company procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail when collecting engineering data, documenting test conditions, reviewing results, and communicating findings.
  • Mechanical, electrical, and troubleshooting skills with the ability to support complex marine engine and boat system setups.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with engineering, testing, service, sales, marketing, and external partners.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to summarize technical observations and report issues promptly.
  • Requires up to 15% travel for field testing, off-site support, events, training, or related business needs.
  • Must follow all safety rules, environmental expectations, and company procedures, including safe operation of boats, vehicles, tools, and equipment.
