How much do xr prototyping jobs pay per year?

As of Jul 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for xr prototyping in the United States is $123,399.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $92,000.00 and $146,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is XR prototyping?

XR prototyping is the process of creating early models or simulations of extended reality (XR) experiences, which include virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR). These prototypes help designers and developers test concepts, user interactions, and features before building the final product. The goal is to quickly iterate on ideas, gather feedback, and identify potential issues in the user experience. XR prototyping often uses specialized tools and platforms to simulate environments, objects, and user interactions in immersive ways.

What is the difference between Xr Prototyping vs UX Designer?

AspectXr PrototypingUX Designer
CredentialsProficiency in 3D modeling, VR/AR tools, and programmingDegree in design, psychology, or related field; skills in user research and wireframing
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, VR/AR development studios, tech companiesOffice settings, digital design firms, tech companies
Industry UsagePrimarily in AR/VR hardware and software developmentWeb, mobile apps, digital products across industries

While both roles focus on user experience, Xr Prototyping specializes in creating immersive AR/VR prototypes using 3D and programming tools, whereas UX Designers focus on designing intuitive interfaces and user flows for digital products. Understanding these differences helps employers find the right skill set for their projects.

What are some common challenges XR Prototyping professionals face when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

XR Prototyping professionals often work closely with designers, developers, and product managers, which can present challenges in aligning on technical limitations, design expectations, and user experience goals. Miscommunication about platform capabilities or prototype fidelity is common, so clear documentation and regular meetings are key to success. Additionally, balancing rapid iteration with thorough user testing can be demanding, as timelines are often tight and feedback loops must be efficient. Emphasizing open communication and iterative feedback helps XR prototypers overcome these challenges and deliver effective solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an XR Prototyping Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an XR Prototyping Specialist, you need strong skills in 3D modeling, UX/UI design, and spatial computing, often supported by a background in computer science, design, or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Unity or Unreal Engine, AR/VR hardware, and version control systems is typically expected, and certifications such as Unity Certified Developer can be beneficial. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for rapidly iterating immersive experiences that meet user needs and technical constraints in the evolving XR landscape.

Job description

Groove Jones is seeking a Lead or Senior UI/UX Designer to help create the next generation of immersive and interactive experiences across VR, web, and emerging platforms.

Groove Jones is an award-winning creative technology studio that designs and builds interactive experiences for brands, products, and audiences. We partner with clients to create work that blends storytelling, design, and technology across digital platforms.

This is a hands-on UX/UI design role for someone who can bring clarity to complex experiences, create polished UX and UI in Figma, and help carry ideas from concept through implementation. The ideal candidate combines strong interaction design, systems thinking, visual design, and practical technical fluency across web and VR/XR workflows.

Beyond creating exceptional designs, they should be comfortable using AI-assisted development tools, rapid prototyping platforms, and light front-end development ("vibe coding") to build functional prototypes, test ideas, and accelerate product development. They will work closely with developers and, when needed, contribute directly to front-end prototyping to help teams move from concept to production more efficiently.

Local to Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas preferred, not required.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead UX/UI design for interactive products and branded experiences across web, VR, and emerging technology platforms.
  • Create user flows, wireframes, information architecture, interface systems, and high-fidelity designs in Figma.
  • Design intuitive experiences for technically complex, multi-step, or spatial interactions.
  • Collaborate closely with creative directors, strategists, producers, developers, 3D artists, and client stakeholders from concept through launch.
  • Translate ideas, business goals, and technical requirements into clear, usable, visually compelling experiences.
  • Build rapid prototypes to test concepts, communicate UX intent, and accelerate team alignment.
  • Contribute to front-end implementation and design-to-development handoff with a practical understanding of how experiences get built.
  • Use AI-assisted workflows and “vibe coding” approaches to quickly explore, prototype, and validate design directions.
  • Help define UI systems and interaction patterns that work across platforms, including web and immersive environments.
  • Present design rationale clearly to internal teams and clients, incorporating feedback without losing the core experience vision.

What We’re Looking For

  • 6+ years of experience in UI/UX, product design, experience design, or interactive design; Lead-level candidates should bring clear ownership experience across projects and teams.
  • Strong portfolio showing shipped digital work across web, interactive product, immersive, or emerging technology experiences.
  • Advanced Figma skills, including wireframing, prototyping, component systems, high-fidelity UI, and presentation-ready design communication.
  • Experience designing for both web and VR/XR environments.
  • Strong understanding of interaction design, UX systems, interface hierarchy, responsive behavior, and usability best practices.
  • Ability to think conceptually and execute practically, from early flows to polished UI.
  • Comfort with front-end collaboration and implementation, including prototyping or building portions of the experience directly.
  • Familiarity with HTML/CSS and modern front-end workflows; additional experience with JavaScript, React, WebGL, or related tooling is a strong plus.
  • Experience using AI-enabled tools or lightweight coding workflows to prototype and iterate quickly.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative, low-ego working style.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with immersive learning, simulation, branded activations, or real-time interactive products.
  • Familiarity with WebGL, Three.js, React, Unity, Unreal, or spatial UX patterns.
  • Experience designing for Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest, or other immersive platforms.
  • Ability to work across UX strategy, interface design, and front-end experimentation without over-specializing too narrowly.
  • Experience in agency, innovation studio, or client-services environments.
