The Collection Technician I requires an individual possessing the abilities and skills to perform a variety of routine tasks relating to wastewater collection system maintenance with experience and basic skills in jet machine operation, closed circuit television operations, or line blockage analysis that take minimal levels of instruction regarding execution and safety while working in a team environment. Mandatory overtime and shift work may be required.

General Summary
The Collection Technician I requires an individual possessing the abilities and skills to perform a variety of routine tasks relating to wastewater collection system maintenance with experience and basic skills in jet machine operation, closed circuit television operations, or line blockage analysis that take minimal levels of instruction regarding execution and safety while working in a team environment. Mandatory overtime and shift work may be required.
Essential Functions
  • Observes safety regulations
  • Wears required personal protective equipment
  • Follows and enforces recommended safety practices and uses appropriate traffic safety devices such as arrow boards, safety lights, cones and barrels, etc., for traffic flow protection
  • Understands the basics of collection system hydraulics
  • Prepares vehicle pre-trip inspection forms when, and various work documents, operates and cleans jet or CCTV trucks and related collection system equipment
  • Makes customer contact, including required follow-up when blockage events occur
  • Makes minor repairs/replacements on manholes, lampholes, clean outs and other collection system structures
  • Uses two-way radio, mobile data terminals and LAN terminals to update work status
  • Operates power and hand tools as needed to accomplish the work
  • Functions as an active and willing team member
  • Understands 200' sheets, plumbing cards, plans, and related materials
  • Understands the basics of WSSC Water record keeping paperwork

Other Functions
  • Assists in the set-up of sewer cleaning or televising equipment
  • Assists in the cleaning, CCTVing, line blockage analysis, and related wastewater collection system maintenance
  • Assists with or performs the preparation of line blockage analysis reports
  • Flags traffic as required
  • Assists in performing emergency collection system work as required
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Work Environment And Physical Demands
  • Must be capable of lifting objects (up to 90 pounds) on a frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time
  • Compliance with safety regulations
  • Ability to use required appropriate personal protective equipment
  • Capable of working in an environment where there are routine risks of exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture, noise, raw sewage and air pollution
  • May periodically sustain minor physical injuries such as cuts, bruises, and slight burns
  • May involve walking and carrying heavy equipment through difficult terrains such as densely wooded areas, along streams and stream banks, and wetland areas

Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Requires ability and knowledge for analysis and interpretation of procedures, policies, and practices acquired through specific education and/or training
  • Ability to work in a limited supervised environment
  • Ability to work as a self-starter

Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent

Additional Requirements
  • Possession of a valid driver's license, with no more than 4 points, and the ability to obtain and maintain a WSSC Water driver's permit within 90 days of hire or transfer date
  • Must pass Department of Transportation physical and possess a DOT Medical Card
  • Must obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 1 year of hire or transfer
  • Employees in this position are designated or considered emergency personnel; therefore, the employee must report to work as scheduled or as directed by their supervisor when WSSC Water declares an event that requires emergency personnel to report to work.
  • Shift work, on-call, and mandatory overtime may be required
  • Note: Employees have 2 years from date of hire or start of position to successfully complete all skills demonstrations and testing requirements to maintain that level. Failure to do so will result in the employee being moved to a position equal to their existing skills and testing level, or they may utilize the internal posting process to obtain another position or be released
