Job description

Restaurant Background

PRESS was born in 2005 as a restaurant whose ethos is to support the food, wine, and people of Napa Valley. Under the leadership of Chef Philip Tessier, the culinary team draws inspiration from around the globe while staying rooted in the style and ingredients that make the Napa Valley so special.

Over the last 20 years the wine program has grown to its current iteration, representing over 2,700 unique selections from Napa Valley and its vintners. More so, it represents American history. Despite the small fraction of California wine that originates in Napa Valley, the legacy of the region has been, and continues to be, profound. The Grand Award-winning wine list at PRESS is the largest and most extensive restaurant collection of Napa Valley wines, and offers guests a glimpse into Napa Valley history with vintages going back to the 1930s.

The Sommelier partners with the Beverage Director to maintain and evolve this Michelin-star dining experience and Grand Award-winning wine program. This role blends guest-facing service, technical expertise, and behind-the-scenes cellar and program management, including support for private and offsite events.
Key Responsibilities
• Deliver professional wine service in the dining room and at private/offsite events.
• Advise guests on wine selections that complement their dining experience.
• Assist in maintaining and updating the wine list in Toast and BinWise.
• Receive and organize wine deliveries, maintain cellar inventory, and ensure proper storage.
• Support onboarding and education for Managers, Captains, Bartenders, and Sommeliers.
• Maintain stock for by-the-glass and beverage programs.
• Participate in tastings, trainings, and educational initiatives to grow team expertise.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Wine Director or management.
Qualifications
• Proven experience as a Sommelier in fine dining or Michelin-level service
• Strong knowledge of Napa Valley and major global wine regions
• Proficient with POS systems, MS Office, and cellar management software (BinWise, Toast)
• Exceptional teamwork, communication, and guest service skills
• Highly organized, dependable, and committed to continuous learning
• Positive attitude and dedication to PRESS’s culture of excellence
• Flexible availability including evenings, weekends, and holidays
Physical Requirements
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to walk and move briskly throughout service
• Ability to stand for extended periods
Education & Certifications
• Advanced sommelier certification preferred (e.g., Court of Master Sommeliers Advanced or Master
level, WSET Level 3/4, or equivalent)
• Valid Food Handler’s Certificate
• Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) Certification
Compensation & Benefits
• Hourly pay plus tips ($16.90/ hr.)
• Full-time employee benefits: health, dental, and vision insurance
• 401(k) with company match
• Wine education reimbursement, tastings, and wine trips
• On-site staff meals and wine purchase discounts
