What does writing stories involve?

Writing stories involves creating narratives that engage readers through characters, plot, setting, and themes. Story writers use their imagination and language skills to develop original ideas or adapt existing ones, structuring their work with a beginning, middle, and end. The process typically includes brainstorming, outlining, drafting, revising, and editing to produce a compelling and cohesive story. Writers may work in various genres, such as fiction, non-fiction, or children's literature, and their stories can be published in books, magazines, or online platforms.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Story Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Story Writer, you need strong creative writing abilities, a solid grasp of narrative structure, and proficiency in language and grammar, typically supported by a degree in English, Creative Writing, or related experience. Familiarity with word processing software, story development tools like Scrivener, and sometimes publishing platforms is common in this field. Imagination, resilience to feedback, and excellent communication skills set outstanding story writers apart. These skills are crucial for crafting compelling narratives, engaging readers, and succeeding in a competitive literary market.

What are some common challenges writers face when working on story assignments in a professional setting?

Writers working on stories professionally often encounter challenges such as tight deadlines, adapting their writing style to fit the publication's tone, and incorporating feedback from editors or clients. Balancing creativity with editorial guidelines and audience expectations can also be demanding. Additionally, collaborating with other team members—such as editors, illustrators, or marketers—requires clear communication and adaptability to ensure the final story aligns with project goals.

Job description

We are seeking a talented Writer & Storyteller to join our Marketing team to help shape how we communicate our perspective on technology, innovation, and company-building through thoughtful, compelling editorial content. This role sits within ICONIQ venture and growth, which partners with founders defining the future of their industries to transform the world.

As part of the editorial engine behind ICONIQ's venture and growth thought leadership platform, you will bring investment theses, portfolio founder stories, and market insights to life across multiple channels and formats. This is an opportunity for a creative and strategic storyteller who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and is energized by crafting content that resonates with founders, operators, and investors alike.

What You'll Do:

  • Write original content across a variety of formats including newsletters, social media, blog posts, long-form editorial features, case studies, and investment announcements while maintaining the ICONIQ brand voice.
  • Research and develop thought leadership content focused on themes central to ICONIQ's investment strategy, including artificial intelligence, financial technology, enterprise software, and company-building at scale.
  • Edit and elevate content created by investors, partners, and members of the Marketing team while preserving each contributor's authentic voice and perspective.
  • Support the development and execution of newsletters by creating and curating engaging content that grows and retains audiences across the founder and operator ecosystem.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Marketing, Communications, and investment teams to support campaigns, events, and strategic initiatives through strong editorial execution.
  • Brainstorm and test new content formats including founder spotlights, interviews, essay series, and data-driven reports.
  • Help maintain and evolve editorial standards, workflows, and content playbooks in partnership with the broader Communications and Marketing teams.
  • Leverage emerging technologies and artificial intelligence tools to enhance content creation, research, workflow efficiency, and editorial innovation.

Ideal Candidate Background:

  • 6+ years of experience in writing, journalism, editorial, marketing, venture capital, technology, finance, or a similarly high-quality content environment.
  • Exceptional writing portfolio demonstrating range across long-form editorial, thought leadership, social content, and audience-focused storytelling.
  • Strong ability to translate complex or technical concepts into clear, engaging, and accessible narratives for a variety of audiences.
  • Experience collaborating closely with senior executives, investors, or subject matter experts to develop compelling content.
  • Strong editing instincts with demonstrated ability to refine and improve content while maintaining the original author's voice.
  • Deep curiosity and knowledge of the technology industry, startups, venture capital, and innovation ecosystems.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence tools and technologies is a plus. We value team members who are curious about leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and drive innovation.

What We Offer:

  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental and Vision Insurance starting on your first day of employment.
  • Life and disability insurance coverage as well as family and wellness benefits including mental health benefits, fertility benefits, and back-up childcare.
  • A matching 401(k) program.
  • Commuter Benefits program.
  • Stipends to support wellness and hybrid working arrangements.
  • We support employees who wish to pursue professional designations/certifications and offer tuition reimbursement in addition to an allocation for books and other supplies needed for an individual's coursework.
  • Smart-casual dress code.

Location: Applicants are expected to work onsite in our San Francisco office in accordance with our hybrid working policy.

Compensation Range: ICONIQ is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. There are several factors taken into consideration in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. At ICONIQ, we apply a total reward philosophy where all aspects of compensation and benefits are taken into consideration in determining compensation terms.
