Job description

Scientific Editor, Matter
Cell Press publishes over 50 scientific journals, including flagship titles such as Cell, Joule, and Matter, and a growing portfolio of discipline-leading journals spanning the life, physical, and applied sciences. We bring editorial excellence, a commitment to innovation, unparalleled reach and visibility, and a passion for scientific advocacy to all areas of exploration.
About the Role
Matter is the flagship materials science title from Cell Press, continuing to grow in influence since its launch in 2019, publishing work that reflects the entirety of the materials science community. We are seeking a Scientific Editor to join the Matter team and contribute to its continued development as a leading venue for materials science. Working closely with and reporting to the Editor in Chief of Matter, the new editor will help shape the scientific direction of the journal, expand its community, and represent the fields the growing Matter family of titles serves across the broader Cell Press portfolio. In addition to handling editorial responsibilities for Matter, this editor will play an active role in identifying and routing high-quality manuscripts to other Cell Press journals.
Responsibilities
  • Undertaking editorial evaluation of submissions to ensure the scientific quality and broader significance of published work.
  • Developing a cohesive, impactful, and forward-looking journal that reflects Matter's scope.
  • Coordinating at least one special issue per year in collaboration with the editorial team.
  • Drawing on and expanding a network of leading researchers to attract influential submissions to Matter and the wider Cell Press portfolio.
  • Identifying outstanding materials science manuscripts suitable for transfer or commissioning across Cell Press journals, and acting as an ambassador for these fields throughout the organization.
  • Traveling to relevant conferences and research institutes to build community, identify emerging science, and promote Matter.
  • Collaborating with colleagues across sales, marketing, and production to support the journal's growth targets and strategic objectives.
  • Fostering productive relationships with other editorial teams across the Cell Press portfolio.

Requirements
  • A PhD in a field relevant to Matter's scope; preferably a strong background in materials science, although candidates with expertise in highly relevant tangential areas (i.e., physical chemistry, condensed matter physics) are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with emerging AI tools a plus, but not necessary.
  • Prior editorial experience is preferred; exceptional early-career candidates with a strong research background will be considered.
  • Demonstrated ability to think conceptually and critically across a broad range of scientific and technical topics.
  • Strong existing networks within materials research communities, with the ability to engage effectively with researchers at all career stages and across international boundaries.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
