What is a writing director?

A Writing Director is a professional responsible for overseeing and guiding the writing process within an organization or production. They lead a team of writers, set the tone and style for written content, and ensure that all materials align with the project's objectives and standards. Writing Directors often work in fields such as film, television, publishing, or marketing, providing editorial direction, managing deadlines, and collaborating with other creative departments to deliver cohesive and high-quality content.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a writing director?

To thrive as a Writing Director, you need advanced writing and editing skills, a strong command of language and storytelling, and typically a bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), project management tools, and editing software is commonly required. Leadership, creative vision, and the ability to mentor and collaborate with writers are essential soft skills. These competencies ensure high-quality content, cohesive team performance, and effective communication of brand or organizational messages.

How does a writing director typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

A Writing Director often works closely with teams such as marketing, design, product, and communications to ensure consistency and alignment in messaging across all platforms. They provide strategic direction, review content, and coordinate with stakeholders to meet organizational goals. This role frequently involves leading brainstorming sessions, setting editorial standards, and managing feedback to refine the overall voice and tone of the company. Effective collaboration is key to maintaining a unified brand narrative and achieving project milestones.

Creative Director

Austin, TX • On-site

Bakery Agency
Marketing • 11 - 50 employees

Full-time

Re-posted 12 days ago

Job description

Bakery is an independent creative agency built to make people obsessed with great products. We work with ambitious brands to give them cultural value and help them make things people want. We've made work for Nike, Pepsi, Dairy Queen, Shiner, and Buchanan's, among others. We've been named an AdAge Small Agency of the Year four times. We're hiring a Creative Director to join us in Austin.

The job

You own the creative, from the first idea in the room to the last frame that ships. You'll lead a multidisciplinary team on global campaigns for famous brands and cult brands, set the bar for the work, and hold it when a client or a deadline pushes back.

We need creative leaders who stay close to the craft. This isn't a role where you delegate everything and show up to approve it. The best directors here still write the line and art-direct the frame when needed and when it matters most.

You'll also help win business, win awards, and win talent. At a small independent like us, those aren't separate departments. We'll need you to help us win across the board.

Here's what you'll own:

  • Every piece of creative on your team from concept to delivery. Idea, writing, design, film, online, experience.
  • A point of view strong enough to bring clarity to a messy brief.
  • A team of staff and freelance creatives. You'll hire them, direct them, and defend the good work when it's under threat.
  • The room. You'll present to clients, take the feedback that's real, and win the trust to make the work you believe in.
  • Bakery's brand out in the world. Press, stages, juries, awards.

*This role is on-site 3-4 days a week.
